[IBC] Hooray!
The sun's out, trees are blooming; can spring be far behind?
First time in 5 days we've even seen a _hint_ of the sun. Skies are blue and almost cloudless today. It's 65 instead of 45. Japanese plum is in full bloom in the yard. Red maples (Acer rubrum) are blooming in the swamp. I can at least START to think of spring. (We're knee deep in mud, which is even more spring-like.) Will start repotting next week sometime. Hooray! A pox on all of you! We are headed for a year's record of snowfall & low
temperatures. The kids & dogs are stir-crazy, & I got stuck in the snow a block from my house. If 'Chojubai' blooms, which it is threatening to do, I will swoon. [IBC] Hooray!
Gee, I started some Pomegranate seedlings last year. I think every one
I planted came up. They did well all Summer and Fall, then started showing signs of dormancy around November so I overwintered in my cold garage. I just brought them into my house last week and placed in a South window .... and "hooray", every one of them is pushing new growth already. Outside temps are still well below freezing and we had the biggest snow storm of the season yesterday which left 10-12 inches of snow on the ground. But, somehow, just seeing my Pomegranates coming back is enough to help fight off the cabin fever. I've got these trees in four inch pots at the moment. I'd like to repot, but only to trim off the tap root and spread the root pad out a bit. Is that something I can do now, or should I wait until they have a chance to fill out a bit first? None of them has any leaves just yet, but the buds are starting to break. Thanks, Mike Peck Kansas City, MO Zone 5 (or maybe Zone 6 now with the new map?) -----Original Message----- : From: Internet Bonsai Club ] On Behalf Of : Jim Lewis : Sent: Tuesday, February 03, 2004 2:22 PM : To: : Subject: [IBC] Hooray! : : The sun's out, trees are blooming; can spring be far behind? : : First time in 5 days we've even seen a _hint_ of the sun. That's just the stage to go for a repot. I found that mine did not
produce a significant tap root but had many fine surface roots. This is the time to rearrange them removing any crossing ones that can't be untangled and any higher than the new soil line. Make sure you keep them protected after the repot and water thoroughly then leave 'till they start to dry out. They should get moving soon and water requirements will return to normal.
