Default water and seeds for creatures

Will putting down water and seed outside the garden for the creatures,
squirrels, birds, etc, attract more of them for more time during the
day. Could it be that once they are all at the "water-cooler", might
they decide to have lunch inside the garden.

Yes unless you feed them all they want of something they find better than
your garden.

aim for the birds alone. They will drink and then head for the garden
to clear out any caterpillar. The squirrels are only trouble. So, just
water, no seeds.
