My grape tomatoes have plenty of foliage, plenty of flowers and plenty
of fruit. Problem is...they're not ripening. The fruit still keep
a-coming, but even the first set haven't even started to "pink up",
and they've been on the vine for (literally) weeks. We've had lots of
sun and temps in the 80's.

Do I just need to wait, or is this a sign of some deficiency?

A watched tomato never ripens
Your tomato plant knows what it is doing so just be patient and let nature
take its course.

Waiting for the first tomato to turn red is like a 6-year old waiting
for Christmas. It takes forever.
When the tomato is mature, it has a light colored "star" on the
blossom end. It should start turning after that. Start tracking the
variations in colors as the tomatoes mature.

Some tomatoes, when the weather is hot, will not turn red but instead
go more towards yellow. Pick one and see how they taste.

Patience, Grasshopper. Around here we set out plants around May 1st
and expect (the first) ripe tomatoes by 4th of July. With a cool
spring, this may be over-hopeful. "...on the vine for (literally)
weeks" begs for factual data. My sister hasn't answered my last e-mail
in months. Well, weeks and weeks. Well, looking it up, 9 days.

Some of the information I've come across says that the cells in the tomato
plant that form the pigments do not function well in extended temperatures
above 83 degree F. They simply wont ripen. This may be false information, or
there are varieties breed as workarounds. Still you said temps were in the
80s...high 80s? Are most people having this problem in higher temp zones,
experiencing a heat wave, or just impatient?

What is the source of your information? I have never seen that in any
book about tomato cultivation. If that were the case, no tomatoes
would ever ripen in the southern US since it is over 83ºF much of the
time between June and September. Most tomatoes will not set new fruit
if the days are much over 90ºF or nights below 55ºF.

I wish that everyone writing to Rec.gardens would either specify the
climate zone or city they live in. I am in Toronto , Ontario, zone 5 and
just starting to see the odd minute tomato on the plants . It will be a
long time before i see any ripe ones. , but if i knew where you lived it
would be easier to accept .
