Training Peas???
Hello all!
I have a question about peas, and stringing them up.... If you do not string them up, will they grow slower? Mine are now only 3-4 inches tall and am wondering when to start to train them on some sort of growing vine web. Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If your software allows, please copy your post back to me by e-mail (Free Agent is the best software) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Happy Gardening! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Barnet the Happy Gardener ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

No: but assuming you mean English Peas,(Pisum Sativum) the tall varieties will sprawl all over making it easier for slugs and other such critters to pick them than you. The short (dwarf) varieties can benfit from support but it not absolutely essential |

Training Peas???
I run 2"chicken wire between stakes set about 8' apart (just use a staple
gun to afix and pull tight). I ran 2' tall wire this year and my peas overshot by about 4'~~! I think I'll try a dwarf variety next year (and maybe a 4' fence) so I won't have the same problem. Although, I could easily move the vines to harvest them. I would get something up soon, and set it quite close to the peas if you want them to climb. Wait too long, and you'll likely have a problem with many of them not finding the fence. Good luck, S "Barnet" wrote in message ... Hello all! I have a question about peas, and stringing them up.... Training Peas???
I have read that as soon as you see the little tendrils sticking out between
the leaves, you should have something in place for them to grab onto, or they might not ever grab. I have the 2 foot chicken wire going right now, and the peas are at the top of the fence, blooming and producing as I write. If yours are only 3 inches high now, you are either in a very cold climate, or you got them into the ground a bit late (they should be started in March in most of the cold climate parts of the US - earlier in warmer climates) . The problem is that they will begin to give out as soon as the weather stays consistently hot. When mine were about 3 inches, I took the spring pruning clippings from my butterfly bushes (lots of 3-4 foot lengths), put them in the soil near the peas like a picket fence, then braced the chicken wire in and around them. So far it has worked pretty well. No slug holes in the peas yet..... |

Training Peas???
We live in Wisconsin, and we plant our vining peas inside woven wire
baskets with mesh around the bottom to keep the rabbits from eating off the plants. We usually don't plant our peas until May when the ground has started to warm up some. For the past eight years, we've had good pea crops. The baskets are a couple of feet in diameter, and we haven't had any problems with the peas "catching hold" and growing upward.
