growing seeds from dried peppers
Has anyone successfully grown pepper plants from dried peppers from the
supermarket? I've grown seeds collected from ripe fresh peppers, but no luck with the dried peppers -- even if they don't look heat treated. Are the peppers irradiated or something? I bought a bag of peppers at an Indian/Pakistani market and I'd like to try to grow them. They look like little habaneros, but are not *nearly* as hot and they taste closer to Mexican chile peppers. They are very seedy, and they look sun-dried rather than oven-dried. But no seeds have germinated yet (2 weeks). Thanks, regards, Bob |

Irradiation doesn't, for the most part, sterilize seeds. In fact, in some cases, it *increases* vigor, presumably by killing off pathogens that may be feeding on the seeds. Don't know about heat-treated. |

Am thinking of giving it another go this spring. |

Thanks, regards, Bob Some hybrids don't have very viable seeds--the seeds are there but they won't produce well or they won't produce the same characteristics. I've never heard of peppers being treated in a way that hurt the seeds. Potatoes get treated so they won't/resist sprouting and that is an issue if you try to use commercial potatoes as seed. They may simply be too old, have dried out, and are no longer viable. J. Del Col |

I slowly dried out the peppers I harvested (with no heat) and after a few months I planted the seeds from one fruit in a seed starter. I had excellent germination and now I have 8 new pepper plants starting to flower. It's still too cold to put them outside and I have had no luck with hand pollination but I should have a nice harvest this fall. -- John GOTTS http://linuxsavvy.com/staff/jgotts |

Thanks, regards, Bob After writing the previous message, I soaked another 100 or so dundicutt (?) pepper seeds overnight and planted them. Now, a month later, I have 2 or 3 sickly little pepper seedlings coming up. The seeds for whatever reason seem to be just barely viable; I don't know if they are just old or if they've been heat treated -- but if I can nurse these to health I will have a new interesting variety of peppers. -Bob |

I've found they can be tricky to germinate. Mine do best if they are kept in a hot water cupboard (or a warmer pad if one has one). I never presoak them. It sounds like too much water. They have a pretty strict germinating temperature and I'd imagine the peppers from hotter climes would be pickier. -- Cheers, Loki [ Brevity is the soul of wit. W.Shakespeare ] |
