Your welcome Sue, Diana, Gary and Co. Sue, you should slip over here for a while. Is set to reach 38C (approx 100F) here today. Heat waves to follow for 6 more weeks. Should thaw out your toes. Where is it cold / which region in the US are you from Sue? (Not asking for
your address). I can well imagine that the northern and central US States are cold at present. Is Florida spared of the cold? How about Texas and Southern California? So far we are getting close to normal for the season which is about 50 inches. So we are part of the great frozen north this winter. Normal snow here falls on Monday and by Wednesday is only visible in the north side of the buildings where the shadows are deep. Generally you can watch the snow shrink when it gets above 30 degrees. This winter it just seems to turn to solid ice. Our street looks something like ^^---__^^ With both lines solid ice 3/4 of a car wide. I saw the January stats.. about temp, but I don't remember much except we are 10 degrees colder than the normal low and I have no idea how much cooler than the normal high. I am from Chicago and Wisconsin -- the true frozen territory. I grew up with snow falling in October and melting in April. Which is part of why I so enjoyed the Colorado winter -- Snow, but only about every ten years did it really disrupt anything. But this is just so tiresome... It has snowed every Weekend until this last when it snowed on Thursday and Friday instead. Peter,
Parts of Florida (the northern end especially) get very cold in winter. We live on the east coast of FL about 100 miles north of Miami, so our weather is usually great. If one lives even another 20 or 30 miles north of us it starts to get colder. Here, we get our cool days and nights, but extreme cold is rare. For two days last week they predicted nights in the low 30's - very unusual. We hauled in the Vandas and Phals and covered everything else with sheets, but in the end it didn't go much under 50. That's what generally happens. Also, we live on a canal, and the water keeps things a bit warmer than in some other neighborhoods. Florida is the ultimate example of micro climates. Today is rather raw. The temps are in the low to mid 60's and the day is gray. I wish it would just rain and get it over with! The humidity is high, but that doesn't help the trees, etc. Diana "P Max" wrote in message ... Where is it cold / which region in the US are you from Sue? (Not asking for your address). I remember Denver well - Winter Olympics 1976! We had good coverage on our
new colour TV, previously black and white. You are doing it tough, Sue. The iced up snow must be restrictive. How do you protect your orchids? I'm suddenly contented with the hot and dry conditions here. Winter will hit us in a few months. We will get half a dozen light frosts and one or two down to minus 3 Celsius. Most minimums temps will hover around 10 Celsius. Relatively mild when measured against other winter zones. Peter -- ) "SuE" wrote in message ... Hello Diana,
Your climate sound similar to Southern Queensland / Northern NSW (Coastal Plain area), Dave's stamping ground. Am told that the occasional frost occurs in Brisbane West (June to August) but is followed by a lovely sunny 23C day. The full blown tropic's over here, commence in the far north at approx. Tully Qld, 5000 K's north of me. Look after those Vandas and Phallies! Peter -- ) "Diana Kulaga" wrote in message .. . Peter, Parts of Florida (the northern end especially) get very cold in winter. I have 50% shadecloth on it at all times. When we changed out the end caps to twinwall it became easier to heat. The house has hot water heat so we just ran a loop out to the gh. It is a lean-to against the back (west) side of the house. The south end is even with the end of the house. We added a small electric heater in the stair well (cold sink) but have just held high 50's thru the worst of the cold. We are not used to long cold stretches or long snow stretches. This is the area where you can jump temps. Yesterday it was from 1 to 46 - just a normal day/night shift. Last week we were happy with a high of 36 this week it is predicted to be our low. 'Hold thumbs' we hit 50 degrees F. today. We will then start to reclaim the street. The city of Denver is importing a big snow melting machine such as they used to clear NY city central area so they can have the New Years Eve bash ice free. It melts 200 tons an hour. I have no idea what volume that is. But with the Mountains of snow from clearing parking lots and streets into dump trucks - then piling it centrally... They have some parks (ball fields) and parking lots to unclog. SuE http://orchids.legolas.org/gallery/main.php |

Two drops of rain in this area, if that. Still gray out.

Your doing well keeping the temp in the high 50's F, under the
circumstances. A few more months from relief, I guess. Good luck. Peter -- ) "SuE" wrote in message ... On Mon, 05 Feb 2007 11:37:10 GMT, "P Max" wrote: You are doing it tough, Sue.
