Does anyone know of UK public or private plant databases with plant names
and varieties ?

The RHS Plant Finder is online at

http://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/

Not specifically UK, but Index Kewensis is one of three sources used for
IPNI (mentioned up thread).

Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh (RBGE) have a Flora Europaea at
