Default phosphorous usage in Malvaceae

hello
hope this question is appropriate for this botany newsGroup
could someOne please explain why the Malvaceae (specifically Hibiscus
rosa-sinensis (tropical Hibiscus)) canNOT tolerate phosphorous vs. other
angiosperms
for example every fertilizer i find with a high phosphorous is for
flowering except the books on the hibiscus state that the potassium is
for flowering (other plants i believe use the potassium mainly for the
roots -- hibiscus use the phos for the roots.)
i would be interested in the biochemistry of the npk usage.
thanks very much in advance!
