I am still trying to find the correct classification for Betula 'Trost's
Dwarf.' Somebody said it depends on whether the leaves are fuzzy. Well, let me
tell you the entire leaf, petiole, & twig are fuzzier than a peach.

Well, FWIW,

http://plantsdatabase.com/go/51688/

says it's _Betula pendula_.

http://www.bonsai-bci.com/species/birch.html
http://www.bonsai-bci.com/species/botanical_index.html

agree, as do various other "hits" on my initial search.
Is there a reason to doubt this ID is correct? I didn't
see any pages giving it a different species name in a
cursory glance through the first few screens of search
results.

regards.

xfennica Dörfler [1902, Herb. Norm., 44 : 106] (B. nana x pendula)

That should be very interesting. Where can it be found?

As far as 'Trost's Dwarf' is concerned, it was registered in 1985 as a cultivar
of B. pendula, by the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta,
which is the registration authority for all the orphan genera.
Now that I have a chance to study it, it is a fascinating little tree. The
leave are like feathers, with the lobes drawn out into long laciniate tips. You
would never take it for a birch until it grows its white bark, which takes
several years in the ground. I don't know if it ever blooms.

INTA has 2 Betulas albas, Linneus and Flor de la France (Coste) which seems
wrong.
"sensu" in this case means "also".
"Ga" means France mainland in Europe, does not includ the island of Corcega.

I am still trying to find the correct classification for Betula

'Trost's
Dwarf.' Somebody said it depends on whether the leaves are fuzzy.

Well,
let me tell you the entire leaf, petiole, & twig are fuzzier than a peach.

I am afraid I don't understand this one.
It seems to be using Betula alba as a current name?

I think he's referring to the Synonymy of the French Flora at INRA
(URL:http://www.inra.fr/Internet/Centres/...df/consult.htm
#Recherche).

This doesn't give a complete classification - only taxa found in France
- but has some utility for tracking down synonyms of European (and
naturalised) species. (I've found some synonyms for Malva and Lavatera
species here that are (were?) missing from IPNI.)

The web page has accepted taxa emboldened. It turns out to use Betula
alba instead of Betula pubescens (presumably instead of rejecting Betula
alba as a nomen ambiguum, or whatever the terminology is); Betula pendul
is also recognised. Betula alba is used that much nowadays, but Tilia
vulgaris, which I believe is a similar case, still gets a fair but of
usage.

As far as 'Trost's Dwarf' is concerned, it was registered in 1985 as a

cultivar of B. pendula, by the American Association of Botanical Gardens and
Arboreta, which is the registration authority for all the orphan genera.

Actually only the orphan genera of woody plants.
Makes quite a bit of difference.

Betula alba and Tilia vulgaris cannot be similar cases as Betula alba is a
nomen utique rejiciendum:
http://www.bgbm.fu-berlin.de/iapt/no...s/0115Appendix
IV05.htm and Tilia vulgaris is not.
Betula alba cannot be used, ever.

INTA has 2 Betulas albas, Linneus and Flore de la France (Coste) which

seems wrong.
"sensu" in this case means "also".
"Ga" means France mainland in Europe, does not includ the island of

Corcega.

+ + +
Seems more likely that "sensu" in this case means "sensu" (= "as used by")
