I haven't seen a cross-post or troll-post for over six

BTW, I am using the filtering that comes with Agent 2.0; I can't
speak for other newsreaders...

Hi David,

I have 2.0 also. Two questions.

1) can newsgroups be blocked out?(ie. alt atheism etc)

2) under cross post management do you have the box checked

"look for cross posted messages only..."

TIA

Larry

Hi Larry,

1) The only way to "block out" an NG that I am aware of is to just
not subscribe to it in the first place. However, the issue here is
that, completely disregarding net etiquette, knowingly and sometimes
unknowingly, cross-postings are being made between newsgroups. And
there is no simple way that I am aware of in Agent to, "kill all
cross-posted messages".

2) Cross-Post Management, as mentioned by Courageous, was designed to
eliminate downloading of postings that have already been downloaded to
another subscribed group. I have already been down this road, and it
is possible to make it work; but to do so you first have to subscribe
to those groups and then download their headers. Too clumsy.

But if you will follow the steps in my earlier post, you can solve the
problem.

I am sure that the miscreant children will continue to seek ways
around the filters, but once the filters are in place the children
will have to modify their own behaviour, (change/modify words, names;
forge names, addresses, etc.) in order to play their silly game. But
as soon as they have to start modifying their behaviour then they will
have lost their power to control (which is the real issue here),
because they no longer control the rules. And the amount of effort
that they will have to expend will continue to increase exponentially.
Why? Because -- updating the rules in an already established filter
is a quick, simple, no-brainer...

Well, right now I have more important, and interesting, things to
attend to.

Good luck Larry, and let us know what your solution becomes, and how
it working for you!

Since I'm new here can someone elaborate on what is with all the cross
posting and trolls?

Did you all have some kind of invasion of idiots on
this forum? I'm still finding my way around here.

=====================================
We have one person here who is causing all this cross-posting in a failed
attempt to kill this newsgroup. Most people either killfile all his
sock-puppets or simply bypass all the cross-posted threads. Other people
don't bother to snip off irrelevant Newsgroups so when they reply to the
troll it comes here as well as all the other groups. Just try and ignore
it. You will soon learn which threads to bypass without wasting your time.

I wish I could do that. I am using Outlook Express only because I don't
know of anything else.

A "killfile" sounds like a good idea!!!

I finally got tired of all the cross-posting going on with the multiple
groups and spent a little time blocking all the cross posters (except
recognized contributors to ponding on this forum). Much easier to see pond
stuff with out all the clutter. Whew! Now maybe I can catch up.

I didn't bother trying to build multiple filters; I just clicked
messageblock sender for all the ones I didn't want to hear from anymore.
Took a few minutes, but worth it.

Thanks Larry & David.

I've pretty much got people and sometimes subjects deleted, was just
wondering if I wanted to go so far as to catch the crossposters too. I'm
not getting that much garbage any more, so it isn't too big a deal... just
want to keep the arsenal ready. ;o) ~ jan

Jan,
I misunderstood. I interpreted that you were starting from scratch.
From the brightside though, I'm glad that you have been already
successful. I hope then that my overzealous instructions will be
helpful to others less far along.
But note, BTW, that those instructions will also easily kill your
crossposters as well, if/when you feel the need.
Regards, David

Yes, I've got yours & Larry's info locked, so I can refer back to it, if
the need arises. ) Thanks again. ~ jan

I bet it wasn't easy...
Since OE doen't have a cross-post filtering option...

No, that would be the human brain that does the filtering. You simply look
at a post and see if it is crossposted. If so, it gets the axe.

George; I think you'd be the only person finding an insult there.

I've got Agent, how does one stop the cross posting clowns? ~ jan

Do you have 1.93 or 2.0?

Do to GROUP the default properties and see if you can get into
crosspost management.
Let me know.
Larry

Hey, Larry, I just stumbled upon this in my locked messages. Apparently I
was waiting for my computer guys to tell me if I had 1.93 or 2.0 and than
forgot all about this. Never did find out, but today I did what you
suggested above and found crosspost management. Hopefully I checked the
right boxes. Thanks. ~ jan

LOL, that was posted some time ago. But glad your xpost management is
letting fewer meaningless posts through.

Spoke too soon. So I go to Group, click on Default Properties, click on
crossposts... and evidently still not checking off the right boxes...
because I'm still getting them. Larry help! :-0 ~ jan

I've been getting tons too and have been filling my killfile folder. I
went back to the help section and read up on whether or not I was
using the crosspost management properly.

I decided to use the PROPERTIES not default properties and I checked
off the overide box in every section including crosspost management

In the crosspost management section there is a box the says "enable
......(applies to all newsgroups). MAke sure this is checked off.

I'll let you know if this solves the deluge problem. Agent should be
doing a better job so I think I have been misusing it.

Stau tuned.
