Default Ah, much nicer

I finally got tired of all the cross-posting going on with the multiple
groups and spent a little time blocking all the cross posters (except
recognized contributors to ponding on this forum). Much easier to see pond
stuff with out all the clutter. Whew! Now maybe I can catch up.

Yep, I do the same on a daily basis.. I add any cross posted off topical
replies whatsoever to my killfile.

Yes, I agree. I haven't seen a cross-post or troll-post for over six
weeks now. It must be really painful for these people to discover
that all their efforts are not only just ignored; they aren't even
seen! How bad must it feel to learn that one is simply irrelevant?

BTW, I am using the filtering that comes with Agent 2.0; I can't
speak for other newsreaders...

Since I'm new here can someone elaborate on what is with all the cross
posting and trolls? Did you all have some kind of invasion of idiots on
this forum? I'm still finding my way around here.

Do you have 1.93 or 2.0?

Do to GROUP the default properties and see if you can get into
crosspost management.

Let me know.

Not necessaruly "all" idiots, but lengthy discussions on irrelevant to
ponding issues posted to multiple newsgroups rather than contained to
topical groups. There were a fair share of trolls, though.

I think this just makes it so that you don't see posts in one
newsgroup that you already read in another. Thank you for that,
by the way. Useful b itself.

If one is really concerned about this, several newsgroups are
being routinely abused in the crosspost trollage. talk.origins,
alt.atheism, jehova's witness yadda yadda. One could make filters
for all of these easily. None of them belong in legitimate rec.ponds
threads.

Does Agent's filter capability offer any kind of non trivial
language capability? Perhaps one could automatically delete all
messages on rec.ponds that exceed a crosspost count of two.

Anyway, "nfilter" is what you are looking for if your favorite
reader's filter isn't up to snuff.

I wish I could do that. I am using Outlook Express only because I don't know
of anything else.

A "killfile" sounds like a good idea!!!

A rec.pond Regular known as Reel Mckoi aka Cracklin known as Carol
Witkowki email has invaded the
alt.religion.jehovahs-witn NG with her hatred of them and all
Christians in general. She then made a sladerous comment that a certain
Jabriol raped his daughter at the age of 13 got her pregnant.

At this time Jabriol Snap and returned all her harrasment here. This
alerted thr rec.ponder group regulars That Carol was indeed a fraud,
and not the person everyone thought her to be. Most of her advice on
rec.ponds are not original postings, but cut and past from ponds
websites and blogs. Most rec.ponders have indeed put Carol in thier
kill files, and you will notice, that while she replies amny post as
Reel Mckoi, very few people answer her.

She has now under the persona of Cracklin' and with the use of
remailers been hitting one NG after another to spread lies about
Jabriol. Just do a google search on Jabriol and Cracklin'and you will
see how she invading group after group with the same lies. Jabriol just
return those posting here.

While using filter are great, not everyone knows how to use them, ans
anybody who is interested in the group will download headers or scan
them on google and notice that rec.ponds has more subjects on religion,
abortion, and slanderwars than the subject of ponds, and effectively
drive people away. Carol was told about this, but she really doesn't
care.

Most people here who are on topic are those who know how use thier
filters. However, they can do better if they created a Yahoogroup where
a moderator can effectively remove all post not on topic.
Another suggestion would be to create a moderated News group. like
Talk.ponds or something and have Jan and Maxx and Roy moderate the
group.
This would remove the ReelMckoi fungus from this group forever.

I have OE and you can block newsgroups. Try this:
On the menu bar (New Post/Reply Group/Reply/etc.)
go to Tools
then Message Rules
then News
then New
then 1. where the message is on specified newsgroup
then 2. delete

Alternatively, you can go to Message,
then Create Rule from Message and
proceed as above.
(the Tools route is good for modifying
something you established earlier).

Try it, see if it helps. I've been blocking specific
posters from other groups but I might try to block
newsgroups. You can also block subject lines but I
find that dangerous since once you block specific
words you do it on all newsgroups. There are some
newsgroups where I don't mind reading *some* of
this stuff! Just NOT in rec.ponds .

BTW, if you simply want to block a poster in
OE, go to Message then Block Sender. That
can get rid of a lot of the off topic messages.

Add to my earlier post: I just tried blocking
newsgroups, and it seems in OE you have to
subscribe to the ng you want to block! I'm not
sure I want to do that.

See, play by my rules and even you can be seen...

But since you trying to be "infomative", I'll just drop a little

I prefer solid data myself, and can back up all my obsevations with

Hi Jan, (and anyone else that uses Agent, and could use a bit of
help),

This will get you started:

From Agent,
1) HELP=INDEX=USENET FILTERS will put you in the middle of the
instruction topics. (There are 12 of them in my version of Agent)

From there,
2) ADD USENET FILTER DIALOG BOX provides a page of reading that you
need to be familiar with, as well as several internal filtering
sublinks

From there,
3) HOW TO CREATE MESSAGE FILTERS provides some more introductory
basics

From there,
4) EXPRESSION EXAMPLES you begin to see that you can carry this
about as far as you wish. (There are limitations, but so far I have
been able to do the job without even getting close to them).
Note especially the Example 1 expression:
subject: ($ | $$ | $$$* | $money* | sex* | porn*| xxx*)

Now, as a working example:

Right click on a posting that you don't like,
then
FILTERS=ADD KILL FILTER drops you into the dialog box that you have
already read about. And there are several options that you have
already read about. You will want to do some tinkering and
experimentation here regarding what to include or exclude from the
filter expression, but trust me, it's not that difficult.

Do several of these, until you get the hang of it, then right click to
FILTERS=OPEN FILTERS WINDOW to see a tidy display of what you've got
so far.

(To get out of this window, and return to the NG, click
WINDOW= rec.ponds)

Now, return to the Example 1 expression in 4) above. You can easily
create a condensed Subject filter like this one, where each term
betweeen the vertical bars is a word that you don't want to hear about
in a subject line. (e.g., I don't find much relevance, at least in my
own particular sphere, between God and rec.ponds).

Now, similarly, you can also create a condensed Author filter, with
names that you don't care to experience as authors. (You probably
don't need any examples here.)

Finally, I have found it useful to use the "IGNORE" option in the
dialog box, initially, just to be able observe how the filters are
working for a while. (It's also rather perversely satisfying g.)
Then, after a while you can change to the "DELETE" option, and these
people then simply just become irrelevant.

HTH.
Best wishes, David

BTW, the following is extracted from the Agent FAQ. If you want, or
need to go deeper, there are a lot of ways to go much farther than I
have described above:

Hi David,

I have 2.0 also. Two questions.

1) can newsgroups be blocked out?(ie. alt atheism etc)

2) under cross post management do you have the box checked

"look for cross posted messages only..."

TIA

Larry
