Default pump off or on?

My first winter with a garden goldfish pond here in the UK.
Do I turn the water pump (submersible) off or keep it on?
If it needs to be turned off, do I take the 'Green Genie' out and clean all
the internal filters.
Sorry for asking two questions for the price of one!
Cheers,
Gary.

## That would depend on the climate you live in. Here in the USA, zone 6,
people shut the pumps off so the water can go through it's conversion. The
warmer water drops to the bottom where the fish spend the winter months. A
running pump can stop that from happening. Also the fish, in a state of
hibernation, don't need to be fighting a current. Just keep a hole open in
the ice.

If it needs to be turned off, do I take the 'Green Genie' out and clean
all the internal filters.

## I don't use Green Genie so can't make any suggestions there.......

Hi Gary!
That all depends on how cold it gets where you live. If you have days
and days and weeks of freezing weather and the water typically freezes
over for the most of the winter, I would suggest turning the pumps off
so as to not 'super cool' to bottom layer of water that is warmer than
the top or upper depths of the pond. I live in Colorado Springs, CO and
today my pump was turned off as we will be having temps into the 20's
for most of the week. That is a bit too chilly for the fish.

If you do turn your pumps off, when you do, that is a good time to clean
the filters. Makes for a nice easy start up in the spring.
Happy ponding!
W. Dale

CArol has no clue as to what the weather or winter conditions in the
UK are like yet she can not resist theurge to make a post so it looks
like she knows somehting, but what she said means nothing at all
because it never answered the original question......just the urge to
post,, so she can try and drum up a few new gulible folks and see if
they wanna be her new found friends.

Gary
Last year we left the pump on, we live in teh south of england so we don't get really harsh weather, but the pond does freeze over from time to time. We found that leaving it on created a bad problem with weed, it was a very fine green weed that covered the whole pond. In previous yeasr the pump has always been turned off and we didn't have the same prblem so this year its off! Hope this helps. I am no expert on ponds we inherited ours with the house ten years ago and we basically don't do much. We forget to feed the fish half the time but they seem to survive ok!
Good luck
Linny
