Does anyone here have fancy guppies?
I foolishly bought a male and female fancy guppy for my small water garden
to keep down the mosquitoes. I now have to winter them over (well actually winter over Mom and two offspring) and I don't have a clue when I should bring them in, if they have to have filtered water or I can simply change the water on a daily basis (I'm going to have a very small tank by the kitchen sink), etc. They don't eat any of the food I give them that I can see so I don't even know about feeding them. Any help would be appreciated... DKat |

For 4 guppies, you could either get one of those small tanks with filters:

DKat guppies are easy, just water and a plant for filtration is fine. -- http://www.kencofish.com Ken Arnold, 401-781-9642 cell 401-225-0556 Importer/Exporter of Goldfish,Koi,rare Predators Shipping to legal states/countries only! You may want to add, with guppies, if you have males and females, you can quickly end up
with LOTS of guppies. The rules for keeping them healthy are basically the same as with a pond. Keep the water sweet and clean (I prefer an undergravel filter in a small tank with lots of beneficial bacterial such as StressZyme, and I also usually add a 'backpack' waterfall type filter just to keep the water sweet smelling, and fresh.) They aren't as picky about water temperature as, say Tetras, but overcrowding can quickly become an issue if they breed. When I bred them, I allowed them to drop the fry in tank, and gave lots of "breeding grass" for the babies to hide in. Just like any other fish, pond or otherwise, chlorine in the water will kill them, so remember to use a chemical dechlorinator, or let the water sit for 24 hours before adding to the tank. Who knows, by spring you might have LOTS of guppies! I got rosy reds for my pond. The girl at the pet store said they don't eat mosquito larvae, but since they are a kind of minnow, I was a bit skeptical. I got them just because they were so cute. Good luck to dkat with the guppies! -- Dee Drop "BYE" to email me. Can we add gupies to our Koi/Goldfish pond?

Guppies are like koi, they'll eat anything that fits in their mouth. They just have a smaller mouth. If it moves, it's food. Sameer |
