Grubs
Do grubs harm Rose plants? Mine never seemed to do well for the last couple
of years and now I think I know why. We noticed grubs in our front and backyards last year and are trying to combat them one we loose the snow (we live in Toronto, Canada). Any good recomendations for getting rid of them safely (we have a dog that loves the backyard). Any advice appreciated. TIA Heather Toronto, Ontario, Canada Hi Heather, There's different types of grubs and yes, they can harm your roses. Some grubs are the larvae of Japanese Beetles, which can completely destroy your plants. Other grubs will chew on the roots of almost anything planted in your garden. Milky Spore is an effective control and won't harm you or your pets. It's simply a bacterium that eats grubs. It will survive the winter and an application is effective for ten years. One drawback - it's a pain in the butt to apply. You have to divide the area where you're going to apply into a grid when the soil is warm and work it in. Mike z8TX |

Grubs
Grubs typically chew the leaves when they become beetles and this is very notice-able. They do not seriously affect the root system. The cause of you rose problems lies elsewhere. -- Theo in Zone 5 Kansas City "Heather" wrote in message ... Do grubs harm Rose plants? I believe japanese beetle grubs are not picky about the type of roots they eat and will eat the roots off of roses as well as grass. As someone here (sorry I forgot who!) has already recommended, Milky Spore is a good preventitive. It was easy to put down and all I was told to do was wash it into the soil with water afterwards. It provides optimim protection in aproximately three years and has been recorded that the protection can last up to 18 years. I'm currently on a campaign to get all my neighbors to put some down to help cut down on the japanese beetle population. At roughly $20 for a can that will do 2500 square feet, I think in the long run, it's pretty cheap. Susan s h simko at duke dot edu |
