I've seen all but Lacey Oak and Bur Oak, Red Oak at all the box stores. I just
bought a 5 gallon redbud 'Forest Pansy' for 16 dollars at Home Depot in Round
Rock. I have no experience with Ted's Trees, but supporting the locals is
always a good idea. We don't have any decent garden centers here in Round Rock.

My own preference is for smaller trees, but if you want or need size
immediately Ted's is reputable source for you.

Smaller trees (1-10 gal. or so) adapt more quickly after transplanting
and within a few years will catch up in size to larger transplants.
And they're of course far less expensive. Of other nurseries in town,
Barton Springs Nursery has the widest selection and best prices I've
found on native tree species. Most of my own trees come from there.

I second the Barton Spring Nursery recommendation, and I've noticed plenty of
yellow bells and Texas mountain laurel on my recent visits. They have lots of
trees in the back and have plenty of helpful, knowledgeable staffers. In
between Walsh Tarlton and Westbank (or for the big picture, in between
Mo-Pac and 360) on Bee Caves Road in West Lake Hills.

We have bought several fairly large trees from Ted's Trees and had them
"install" them. They had good selection and prices and were great to work
with. If they put the tree in, they guarantee it for a year. I recommend
them highly. They will negotiate a bit on prices, too, especially if you
are buying out of peak season or buying more than one tree at a time.

I fully agree with smaller is better. I can also second your Barton Springs
Nursery and I find they are even better with plants than Natural Gardener. I've
gotten some very wonderful plants at Barton Springs.

My brother-in-law, when seeing the Drake Elm we got from Ted's Trees, asked
if we'd gotten a deep discount due to the fact that it apparently had never
been pruned and that we'd need to do so (heavily) over the next several
years to address the many serious crotches in the tree. When told "no" and
how much we paid, he suggested we not buy from them again.

We did try another source (on 620, just north of Parmer). We called each
day they were supposed to deliver to confirm and waited -- only to have them
never show up. After several such incidents, I stopped by their office to
cancel our order. Oddly enough, they attempted delivery later that same day
and wound up wasting a trip to our home.

So, in short, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you with regards to larger
trees. I buy more moderately sized ones at a place on Pond Springs Road.
Bought a much better Mexican Redbud there (and at lower cost) than their
competition down the road (Red Barn).

Thanks for all the advice ... I really appreciate it.

I picked up a 6 trunk Texas red oak from a landscaper that is now out of
business for a great price. I am going to pick up the Possumhaw Holly from
Ted's Trees this weekend. Ted's is out of Lacey Oaks at the moment, but I
will pick them up once they are back in stock. I got the remainder of items
at South Side (in north Georgetown by the McDonald's).

It is amazing the difference between the various companies as to what they
have. Some have great deals on a specific item (mulch, oaks, or
whathaveyou) and then deeply hurt your pocket book on other items ($2.00
Lowe's mulch for $6.00 at one local garden center). I saw an $8.00 variance
in yellow bells from one place to another for the exact same item, quality
and size.

It pays to do some driving around and shopping to get the best of all
items -- I am just glad this newsgroup has friendly and helpful people.

I live in Round Rock and have purchased 4 trees from Ted's which they
installed. Cherry Laurel, Red Oak, Chinquapin, and Live Oak have been
installed. My Red Oak looks as though it might have Oak wilt ... its
what I feared the most in planting it. I would suggest a Chinese
Pistache because of its hardiness and resistance to any diseases. I
will be planting one this weekend. Green and Growing in Pflugerville is
the best all around nursery I have found in Austin and its surrounding
areas.
