Default Hebe help

hello all - I am new so please be kind!

I moved into my house last year and its my first garden, I am very
enthusiastic but have very little knowledge about gardening.

I was very kindly given 3 hebe last September which I duly planted. They are
in semi shade and have been well watered.

Up until now I hadn't noticed much of a problem, but looking at them today
as I started clearing up ready for the spring I notice that on all three the
majority of the foliage is brown with only the under branches are still
green.

Have I killed them?
Or will they go back in the spring?
What did I do wrong?

Thank you!

Hello, Jackie. People here range from the expert professional to people in
precisely the same state as you. I'm somewhere in between, still with a lot
to learn but luckily for me, married to a nurseryman!

I was very kindly given 3 hebe last September which I duly planted. They are
in semi shade and have been well watered.

AIUI, hebes like to be in sun and a well-drained soil, though they don't
like their roots to get too dry. Is it possible the place they're in is too
shady and that the rain drains away too rapidly? And of course, the other
question is, where do you live and have you had severe frosts?

Have I killed them?
Or will they go back in the spring?

X fingers that they will if you take off the dead bits. But in the unlikely
event that someone here can't help you, here's a useful link:

Not all hebes like cold weather.

I've had some die on me in the past while others romp away.......

It was not been the best winter for Hebes, they do best near the coast with
low frost levels, so it could be frost damage, but also being an evergreen,
planting in Autumn is not as good as planting in spring as they can die of
draught when the cold comes as the ground freezes and their own root system
is not well enough established to cope. Cold drying winds aggravate the
problem.
Don't worry they have amazing powers of recovery and if there are still live
bits it will regrow.
Tidy the plants in April once the cold weather is past. Next year they
should be fine.
