so I'll introduce myself and jump right in.

I'm a 42 year young girl who lives in the Cheshire countryside with my partner, my two children, two step daughters every other weekend, three cats (one of which believes he is a dog), two adorable jack russells (which DON'T help with the gardening) and a friendly spirit (at least I think we have one anyway). I work nearly full time in a secondary mainstream school with kids that have learning/behaviour problems, it's a fun, challenging, heart rending and at times infuriating job but I wouldn't do anything else in the world though. Emmm, well maybe, when I'm older and my kids have grown up I will go to work for the local council doing all the gardening stuff, being outdoors all the time in all weathers would suit me just fine.

I have two passions, the weather and gardening. I am still quite new to the gardening thing though. I am becoming more knowledgable but sometimes do stupid things like prune my lavender at the wrong time and ruin it! I am so mad with myself for doing this and really should have known better. I have just increased my veg patch and I have a lovely new potting shed at the bottom of the garden. I am a very happy girl!

Today I am still in my jamas because I had a bit too much wine last night and feel a bit ill. For goodness sakes though, I only drank 3/4 bottle which really isn't much is it? But I don't drink so I guess that's why my head is hurting today. Anyway my veg patch is beckoning because my spuds and carrot seeds badly need planting and I'm trying to muster up some energy and a clear head to get out there and do what needs to be done.

Well that's enough about me. Hope it wasn't too long a intro. I look forward to conversing with you all and learning lots more about about gardening.

Oh and my name Tom&Barbara comes from the the affectionate nickname my partners family refer to us as. Can't think why!

and fun: there are some real experts here as well as motormouths like
me.You may like to try direct access to uk.rec.gardening (which is where
I'm reading you). If you haven't got what's called a "newsreader", you
can get here by clicking:

and then saving the page in your Favourites.

Beware, though: the "Reply" button there is partly broken. If you want
readers to understand what you're replying to, you have to click "Show
options" and then the "Reply" link which appears at bottom left of the
header which comes up. Dead easy when you've tried it once, but we'll
explain more if necessary.

Personally, as an amiable but sometimes grumpy old man, smileys make me
frown! Opinions are mixed, but I know I'm not the only one who hates
them: if people can't tell when I'm joking, it can't have been funny in
the first place!

I think Barbara (hi there) might have meant some kind of bulletin-board
smiley icon which those awful web forums use. That's probably why she's
transmogrified into "Tom&amp" on URG because whatever HTML icon she put
in her subject heading hasn't translated across to the text based
newsgroup.

many proper news servers as it contains binary information for a text

Taz, you'll notice that your message arrived as an orphan, without
quotes from what you were replying to. This isn't your fault: it's
because the GG "Reply" button is broken. Instead, try clicking "Show
Options" and then the "Reply" which appears at the left. This will give
you the previous message in a reply window, and you can trim it as
necessary.

I think this is the way newsgroups and forums will go in the future. I even find
myself doing the above if I need some specialist info about HTML or
whatever.........Ask a question - hopefully get a answer - say thanks and depart
till next time.

Back in the old days when not so many people were on the net, newsgroups were
indeed small groups of people that tended to be rather closed. It was all a bit
elitist and this is changing fast. Look how many 'old URGlers' no longer come
in here (Jill, Tony, Anton to name but a few)

At least most GB people introduce themselves (!)
