Plastic Greenhouses
Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with those inexpensive plastic
walk-in greenhouses, the type that are sort of like a tent that you can get at Argos or Index, etc? Thanks. |

No experience, but I bought one of the 4-shelf ones (not walk-in) from ASDA last week, where it was reduced from 24 quid to 17.77. Other sizes were reduced proportionately, as were items such as seed trays, modules and lids. -- Stuart Baldwin news\at/boxatrix\dot/co\dot/uk |

Thanks for your reply. How does it stand up to the wind? I don't have any
grass or soil to put it on, so I have to put it on a paved concrete area, but I can't figure out how to fasten it down so that it doesn't blow away. Also, does it get mildew and mould? Each spring I take off the plastic, screw it up and put it in the garage, each autumn it comes back out. I've never cleaned it and never had any mould, mildew etc. Hayley |

Hiya,
I got a 6ft by 4ft from Argos a couple of years ago-£15 in the sale. I put it up last summer grew lots of tomatoes/cucumbers/peppers/chillies.Left it all winter in very exposed garden and it would have lasted this year aswell but I was given a glass one. We cut the top off and can use it as a clotch. You get tent pegs to sink into the ground-dont think it would stand up to bad weather without these. Wouldnt you be better off getting a glass one- or at least a aliminium frame then maybe cover it with something suitable--have you looked in your local paper, people are always getting rid of greenhouses, usually for freee Karen |

Hayley I have two of the 4 shelf ones. I call them cold frames. They are great and I grew a lot of seeds overwinter. I have never managed to keep a rosemary over winter here in Scotland so I set some in a pot in one of mine and it has survived but just) I have repotted it and we shall see. O |

I've successfully managed to grow chillies in one for the last couple of years I'v had two for the past few years and wouldn't be without them. This year particularly I've found them wonderful for raising veggie's from seed. I have a piece of rope running around the front of mine and tied on each side to stakes in some fencing (similar to another poster) however if thats not feasable, what about a couple of eyebolts in the concrete and some rope stays or for a temporary fix you could put in a couple of concrete blocks on the bottom shelf not wildly aesthetic but may help to anchor it for you while you work on something more permanent. Shan Hi Shan I've got three, my garden is so tiny, but they take up very little room. The first year I had one it almost blew away in a strong wind, but now we put blocks of concrete or stone flags in the bottom to anchor it, also similar to you we tie it to a fence or hooks on the house wall. They are so useful, I managed to save quite a few geraniums from last summer and a lovely plant, I don't know it's name but it's a greyish leaf with tiny cream coloured antirrinhum flowers all over, I love it. The only trouble is the cover, it gets dry and splits after a while. I managed to replace one this year, but it actually cost just a little less than buying a whole new greenhouse. Had to go online to find get it too, as no local shops stock replacement covers. Eve |

Yes, the first time we put it up it blew down 2 weeks later. The second
attempt has been more successful and even survived the wind of last autumn. This time we taped a lot of the pole sections together and buried the poles and plastic a foot deep. It has since then sunk even further and we now bump our heads when we are in there. I wanted to use it in a similar way to a pollytunnel as we didn't have the space for a big one. Most of the salad stuff, peas, raddish rotted off during the winter whereas the salad in a large cold frame survived. Now however things are romping away again except it has been very cold recently with all the frosts as there doesn't seem to be so much protection as with glass. I'm still reserving judgment whether it is worth the effort. I have one the size of a telephone box, cost next to nothing, no problems
whatsoever, it is cheap and nasty, but it grows tomatoes etc. No broken panes. I have it fastened with screws to a wooden frame set into concrete, Wind? no problems. You get what you pay for. Roberto |
