Pay to receive spam in US!
I thought this one was a windup but no.... In the US, spammers can
now legally call your mobile and YOU pay for the call! What the **** is the matter with these Yanks? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: DO NOT CALL LIST JUST A REMINDER...8 days from today, all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS.... To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS OR GO TO: www.donotcall.gov |

From that website's FAQ:- " 29. If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls? No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most telemarketing calls, but not all. Because of limitations in the jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. Unlike the system in the UK where you pay a different rate to call a mobile the US charge the same for mobiles and landlines but the reciever pays to receive the call if they're using a mobile. |

The imminent release of a cellphone directory may be untrue, but the existance of the "Don't Call" directory, the fact that US mobile customers pay for incoming calls, and the government website referred to are all true. -- Cynic |

It is illegal for telemarketers to call mobiles, but I suspect that is about as difficult to enforce there as it is to enforce telemarketing regulations here. |

It is illegal for telemarketers to call mobiles, but I suspect that is about as difficult to enforce there as it is to enforce telemarketing regulations here. Also true. It seems to work fairly well - I've lived in the US for several years. Since signing-up for the 'do not call' I've received very very few calls on my house phone. I've *never* had a problem from telemarketers on my cell - the few calls I have had were from my bank trying to sell me crap, and stopped when I told them to. How would a telemarketer *know* that they are calling a mobile if they are simply calling random numbers, or numbers in a sequence? Axel |

My US mobile has the same prefix (i.e. the first 3 digits of a 3-3-4 format number) as the land line I use. I should check up on the billing, although I don't think that incoming calls incur charges on my part... although I use it so little that everything gets absorbed by the monthly minute allowance.
