Why the hell do you want to post on an 'allotment' forum when there is a
perfectly good newsgroup here, in which someone will anwer any queries you
may have.

I've noticed the sad decline of usenet in the lastv3 years. I suspect
that it goes un-noticed because no-one makes money from it, and hence
there is no publicity.

But there may be another reason: perhaps text-only is not seen as sexy
by younger users? I used to work on ships where the after-dinner video
was a major social event. I noticed that if I put a black-and-white
film on that everyone under the age of 35 would wander off, as though
they could not see it. Perhaps usenet is the same. Without atavars,
icons, flashing smileys, some people can't read it?

Allotment Forums and any Forum or anything like Gardenbanter, which does not
sing the praises of urg, gets the thumbs down from the owners :-(

If anyone sends me an e-mail that isn't in plain text they get a
request back from me to either send in plain text or not bother
sending me anything.

They don't know what they are missing. I saw a wonderful old B&W
movie the other night (well after midnight of course since it was on
TV) that must have been one of Kate Hepburns earliest. Also had Eve
Arden in it and a truly wonderful cat. It was about young actresses
in a house called the Footlights Club. Must find out what it was as
it was so good I'd like to see it again.

That was a very effective way to burn bridges. And such a reasoned
response to what I thought was a fairly reasonable question..

Years ago there were no online forums. Not as many people had internet
access either and the people who did were somewhat more computer conversant.
Usenet was a bit of an in crowd thing - it isn't anymore.

URG is a prime example of this. In the 'good old days' it was a group of
people who used to converse on-line and there were real life meets where
people got to know each other. Nowadays people tend to pop in ask a question
and not participate to the degree some of the long term 'residents' here
would like "~) I don't have a problem with this at all - I even tend to ask
questions myself in groups were I don't 'participate'. It's more like person
one helps person twoo, then person two helps person three
etc.......eventually person one gets and answer from person thirty five !

But there may be another reason: perhaps text-only is not seen as sexy
by younger users?

Good point ! Internet is becoming such a visual medium - Utube is brilliant
:~)

was a major social event. I noticed that if I put a black-and-white

Did you see that nice BBC prog yesterday about Christmas Past (Ghost of
Christmas) ?? It was REALLY nostalgic !!!

Perhaps Usenet is the same. Without atavars,
icons, flashing smileys, some people can't read it?

A lot of the older generation will now not have a clue what your talking
about :~))

I think that would be Stage Door (1937). Also had Ginger Rogers in it. We
also enjoy old B&W films, and have many, though not that one. If it has a
wonderful cat, I will definitely put it on my to-buy listg. Watched
Gaslight (again!) the other night - the 1944 version with Charles Boyer and
Ingrid Bergman. Wonderful stuff. Our Christmas treat to ourselves is the
purchase of the original TV version of the Forsyte Saga on DVD, B&W, with
Eric Porter, Susan Hampshire, Nyree Dawn Porter etc etc. We are not allowing
ourselves to start watching till Christmas Day (there are 7 DVDs, and I think
over 22 hours of film, so the pleasure may last some time!).

That's it! I did a google after I posted and found a site where a
number of people reviewed it. All reviewers (4-6 people???) all rated
it 5 out of 5 (I'd agree with that).

Also had Ginger Rogers in it.

And Lucille Ball too.

It was worth watching just for the amazing cat - it hung around Eve
Ardins neck like a fox cape but yet it didn't look at all drugged as
it was lively enough when picked up but just draped itself when
required. Truly astounding.

I was recently chucking out some old books cluttering up the bookcase.
I can't yet part with my set of the Forsyte Saga
