Petrol Hedge Trimmer
Have just bought my first one.
I have to put 2% oil in with the petrol. Is it okay or even normal premix, say, a 5 litre container full? How long would it store for made up? mark |

The theory is that the best bit evaporated first and that left will give you starting problems. Being ignorant I take no notice, have some that is a year old, gives me no problems. |

Certainly months is OK. The story used to be that some properties of the oil degraded eventually when mixed with petrol but I think the high quality modern oils don't suffer to any great extent. Just keep it clean - ie around the filler cap of your machine and use a filtered funnel. -- Rod My real address is rodthegardeneratmyisp |

The instructions that came with my petrol mower say not to keep petrol more than 30 days unless you add a petrol conditioner which allows you to keep it for 90 days. I've kept petrol for upto 9 months in a sealed container with out bothering with conditioners. Still seems to work fine after that. |

It is well worth buying one of the mixing cans that have two compartments that you fill accordingly then shake. It is good practise to always run the carb dry when you use the machine unless you intend starting it again that day. I never keep pre mixed fuel more than a month as I have had bad starting problems outside of that. My Strimmer has a pump on the carb which is great for clearing out the float bowl when switching off, and another on the fuel line to prime it ready for the next start. Sadly my hedgecutter only has the priming pump and consequently has to be left running to empty the carb. On this subject, I have just fitted a petrol tap into the supply tube from the tank to the engine on the ride on grasscutter. Now I can run that dry at the end of the season. As long as the tank is nearly empty I can then top up with fresh fuel, turn on the tap, and avoid first start fuel issues next season. Mike |

I used to go too all that problem, of using a 1 litre mixing bottle
and topping it..... But I can't be bothered fiddling around. So I now have a seperate plastic petrol container (5 litres), when it gets nearly empty, I go and fill it back up with 4 litres of petrol, then pour in 100ml of oil (assuming 40:1 mix), as most oil bottles have a see throu measuring gauge. Swish it around and away you go. I have no problems keeping it from one year to the next (over winter) |
