I would put my money of planning permission applied for/granted and being
built on.

Happening everywhere :-((

Of course I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I've emailed David Poole to see if he knows anything. We went there just as
they were opening and they told us that it had started because of a personal
passion. Our guess is that it was too small and too specialised. It was
also a bit out of the way in terms of calling in, although of course, they
did mail order. Ray's comment was that unfortunately, this year might just
put the lid on it for several smaller places and even some of the very big
ones. It's a great shame because KobaKoba did some great plants.
On another note, have you read about this tussle:

I am not looking for anything in particular but it's always sad when places
like Koba pack in. They had lots of weird and wonderful items and were the
best authorities on Musa.
Thanks for the link to Mulu, which is run by a fellow Yorkshireman. He is on
the move-further South perhaps.

I agree. It's a huge shame, especially when so much knowledge and
enthusiasm becomes unavailable. Of course, we can always hope that they're
merely moving to another address but I fear their web site would have said
so if that were the case.
If the trade press has anything in it, I'll let you know but David or
another poster might have heard something. I think the last time I dealt
with them was a couple of years ago when I bought Ray two Ensete ventricosum
Maurelii for a birthday present.

Sacha mailed me about this, but I've no further information about Koba
Koba's closure. The nursery stocked the widest range of Musa and
Hedychium species/hybrids in the UK - maybe Europe even. It was a
phenomenal resource of previously little known or lost-to-cultivation
varieties and its closure is a great loss to serious horticulturists.
However, there are far too few of us to make such a business viable
and specialisation to that degree is fraught with danger. There are
faint rumours of ill-health, but they remain just that. It could be
that the closure is due to pressures other than those of economics.
Whatever the reason, it's none of our business.

The man behind it: David Constantine is a remarkably genuine, highly
respectable and wholly pleasant chap with an astonishing level of in-
depth knowledge and is this country's leading expert on Musa and
related plants. He managed to resurrect an old cultivar of Ensete
ventricosum of which scant information was available and has made it
available once more. Ensete 'Montbeliardii' is a very refined and so
far, much more reliably behaved alternative to the commonly seen
'Maurelii'. It is now firmly back in the limelight due to David's
efforts. Had the nursery continued, who knows what other treasures
might have re-appeared on the market.

;-(( A much bigger loss to the rare plant market than one could have
imagined. I hope the ill health rumours are unfounded.
