Default Growing aubergines outdoors

Does anyone have any tips for growing aubergines
successfully outdoors.I have a fairly warm,but dry
limestone slope in Herefordshire, and grow my plants
in a greenhouse before planting out in June.Although
I did in lots of compost and water well initially and
then every fortnight,I never seem to get more than
about 20 small fruits from about 30 plants.I have been
growing the variety Black Enorma, and will try
Moneymaker next year
Best regards
Michael

Emigrate to somewhere warmer. You are doing well to get any.

I bought half a dozen plants from a local GC and planted them outside.
Can't remember the variety. They barely put on any new leaf or shoot
growth let alone have any fruits. Summer must have been just too cold.
They just sat there looking miserable.

Speak for yourself lol! The weather this year was no good for aubergines but
last year's heat produced some worthwhile specimens. Take a chance and see
if next year is hot outdoors

There are ultra-early varieties selected for cooler climates. realseeds.co.uk is one supplier, which specialises in uncommon varieties of all sorts of veg specially selected for doing well in the garden. Their top aubergine recommendation is De Barbentane.

My wife grew some excellent plants/fruit outside in large pots many years
ago.
I remember large water trays and watering daily, with lots of feed too, and
it was a very sunny summer and they were in a sunny spot.
A polytunnel may help! :-)
