Could be chlorotic. And check that it's draining well between watering, don't over-water and also check the pot is big enough for it. -- Sacha Hubbard www.hillhousenursery.com South Devon |

I wonder if it isn't the leaves just loosing their jvinile colour and now starting to change towards their mature green colour. David Hill |

They do turn a rather sickly lime colour as they lose their redness and become green. Keep an eye on the plant. If all the green leaves seem generally yellowish, then they may be chlorotic. Pieris prefers ericaceous compost, so using an acid feed occasionally will help. Spider |

I was under the impression that Pieris prefer an acid soil. Is JI3 not more of an alkaline preparation with added lime? The yellowing would suggest that. Perhaps repotting in ericaceous compost and a good soaking of sequestered iron may turn things around. -- Gopher .... I know my place! |

a short while ago put some Pieris Forest Flame in some pots with some
new john innes no 3 soil. You need ericaceous compost. If you can't easily repot, add plenty of eri fertiliser. FWIW pieris struggle in our neutral garden soil. They live, but don't thrive. However, the ones in the pots with the right compost have reached 5 feet tall and nearly as wide. They always have a great show of coloured leaves and flower profuciously. The bees love the flowers too Al. |

Pieris is an acid-lover, and John Innes soil based no 3 is too alkaline. You need to replace the soil with ericaceous compost, or water well wil sequestrene. |

writes The message from "john martin" contains these words: a short while ago put some Pieris Forest Flame in some pots with some new john innes no 3 soil. the growing tip leaves instead of being red have turned a pale yellow. Do you mean, they were red when they emerged and are now yellow. Or, they emerged yellow (when you expected them to be red). If its the latter, many pieris do that throughout their lives, and the new yellow shoots soon turn red (or pink) as they expand and mature. However, JI no 3 contains lime, and pieris prefer acid soils. They would do better in an ericaceous compost. http://www.gardeningdata.co.uk/soil/...john_innes.php Janet My Pieris was labelled "Silver Flame", and the leaves emerge red in colour then turn green/yellow, and the "silver" bell-like berries appear later. I think it is more attractive than most Pieris I have seen. (So there)! -- Gordon H Remove "invalid" to reply |
