Silly midoff.
Short leg
I'll see your short leg and raise you a third man

I'll see that and raise you two long legs

I'll try not to see your long legs and raise you a point.

Didn't they abolish that position about the same time as they did away
with longstop?

I was chatting to Arthur Milton once, and my wife at the time asked if
he played cricket at all and if he'd like to have a trial with our
little University staff side. He was really polite and said he'd
take it under consideration. I did tell her later that he was a
double international player for England at both cricket and soccer.

Mind you, this is the same wife who accompanyed me to a party held
locally. The stairs were dressed with knickers on every other step,
people were constantly pairing off, apparently at random and
disappearing for 20 minutes and I was being propositioned at regular
intervals.
After about 5 hours, as we were leaving, she turned to the (by this
time ) shagged out guests and said "Did you hear about all the
wife-swapping going on around here?"
"No" they said, "Never, not heard anything about that"

I did tell her the following day/
