Lucky you, wish there were reds around here!

Reds around here and a "hotline" number to call if a grey is spotted.
Brings out the guns...

Will the hotline number apply to berkshire as well?

And what is it?

Thanks O and for the additional information via email. The price of
some of the beautiful shotguns made me wince ut one can see the work
that went into them and the precision.

Not hugely expensive but my .410 has a beautiful stock Will send pics

If you pay the return mileage and overnights from Cumbria I expect
so. B-)

But have you any Reds down there? TBH we aren't going to elimnate the
Greys without expending an awful lot of effort. We do need to protect
the areas that do have Reds and I feel the only practical way of
doing that is to have wide, flexible, buffer zones around those
areas. If Grey pops it's hed up in the buffer zone it gets it blown
off. The zones being flexible meaning that if the area the Reds are
using changes, so does the outer edge of the buffer zone.

Squirrel Pox is devasting to a population of Reds. Went to Formby
Nature Reserve on the Flyde coast before 2007/8, the woods were
almost running alive with Red Squirrels. Made a return visit a couple
of years later and nearly all the squirrels where dead due to the
pox. I think that population has recovered a little but it only takes
one Grey to get too close...

You could always try your local gun shop, look in yellow pages.

Alan, that site is the one I always use as my sig and is for the
Helpforheroes charity. It has nothing to do with the thread about air
pistols. If anyone wants a suitable place to buy the pistols they can easily
find one through Google.

In fact, he will probably have to buy, in person, from a gun shop, with
proof of ID, etc.

Yes, face to face is necessary.

A friendly request -
Can people please try to snip all the irrelevant guff when following up

previous rersponses - which have also been in most of the previous

hits - just to find in most cases, half a line of (often irrelevant)
text added.

Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. Those of us with a decent
newsreader that has a "hide quoted text" switch will often forget as
we don't see the precursor messages, only the one we're actually
looking at. I usually hide the headers as well.

As for shooting them you have to have a firearms licence which I do not,
and even shooting them can cause them a great deal of pain because they
run from one end to the other of the traps, and they do not stay still
enough for you to get them in one shot, you may injure them and you would
have to have several attempts to manage to make the final fatal shot, in
the meantime they are suffering a great deal!

Alan

So do not trap them, if you don't have a clue how to despatch them. No fox
suffers a great deal in a catch alive trap. One was asleep in mine.
They all go to the foxy heaven in the sky when they are trapped in my hen
run.
It's sad to do it, but I've had a bad time with foxes killing my hens during
the day which means we cannot do foxes here.
