Default Mushroom identity

I have some fungi growing in my garden, but am completely stumped.
None of my books have a match, though quite a variety aren't too
far off.

c. 5" high and 3" across, fairly solid (though less so than common
mushrooms), white all over, with rust-brown spores. A possible
trace of volva or veil, and either free gills or very separable
ones. Lastly, it's somewhat irregular, though fairly conical and
no more irregular than chanterelles.

It could be growing on walnut, hazel or black/red currant roots
(the last unlikely), or else in soil.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Nick Maclaren.
