At that height you won't be able to move it, it won't look good if you try to prune it. So it's a question of whether you're going to cut it down or not. Questions to ask to help you decide are what sort of soil you are on, is there any evidence of damage to house or drains, are you on a level site or a slope (ie where are the main roots compared to your foundations), how old is the house - does it pre-date the tree, what is the probability of "heave" - the effect of removing a tree which has been taking all the water out of the soil, so that now it's gone, the water in the soil causes it to swell and potentially causes movement in nearby buildings.

@gardenbanter.co.uk says... Help.. Have a magnificent 7metre tall Monkey tree, sadly very close to house, any ideas.. Be warned that mature monkey puzzle trees end up as a tall bare trunk with a high umbrella top. They get that way by shedding whole branches successively from the bottom up; you wouldn't want them shedding onto your roof or car. Janet |

I am aware of a similar tree. The owner shortened it. It sent out a new shoot from near the cut. In fact it sent out two. Periodic shortening is therefore an option for managing it, though it will never obtain the shape of the mature tree, sadly.
