A rather elegant Bird Bath/Statue was stolen from the garden last night.
Is there any
point in calling the Police ?

Non whatsoever. It's not a speeding car which will bring in revenue.

If your house insurance covers theft from the garden, you'll need a police crime number for the insurance company.

If you don't report it, then the police have no idea it's happened, and therefore don't have a true idea of crime in your area. there won't be any push for resources in your area because, of course, there isn't any crime.

There is a remote chance that they'll find the perpetrator, especially if they're already looking at him for something else. For example, my father came home to find all his valuables in a pillow case on the landing. He rang the police, they said "we think we've got him" - they had a guy on bail doing his daily report (in between collecting my dad's valuables and going back to collect them), and they noticed my father's gold watch on his wrist, so they hung on to him.

So - remote chance of getting it back. But even if the chance is slim, it's still worth getting it on the record.

Might be worth ringing 101 as you will likely find they have done the
entire street or neighbourhood. Have you checked you garage/toolshed?

You will need a crime number if you intend to make an insurance claim.

Oh - I read this the first time as that you were implying that he might
have put the statue in the shed and forgotten it

I didn't mention car keys, house keys, TV controllers and

in the lock on the outside of the front door.

Oh done that. I lose reading glasses all the time then suddenly find
about 6 pairs.

anybody in our household.

In summer 2005 we found a ladies straw hat in the outside loo after a garden
open day, put it a bag in the utility room to await collection. found it
again in 2011 while remodeling the kitchen and utility, it went over to the
barn with the rest of the junk, this summer in June (2012) a Lady fetched up
and asked if we had found it!
That's what you call memory, me I can never find anything that's why I leave
everything out on view :~)

Versailles. He went back within minutes and the camera had gone. It
was late at night, the street was empty. He was sure that the guy

On a day trip to France many years ago a friend lost her Handbag
somewhere in Cherbourg, what made it awkward to report the loss was
that she should not have been in the Country . We didn't know until we
were aboard the outbound ferry that at the time Maltese nationals
needed a Visa for France ,the lass had a Maltese passport despite
having lived in the UK since she was a child. Her Cousin who looked
very much like her was traveling with her British husband on their
joint passport ,a degree of planned fumbling by those on one side of
the coach delayed the French official on one side whilst the couple
were checked on the other and once checked the joint passport was
swiftly conjured across to the single girl. When the official on that
side reached here he believed she was traveling without her husband,
that meant she was not left alone on the ferry all day. So not being
able to report the loss she was a bit upset but was amazed that 15
min's into the return journey was called to the reception desk where
she was reunited with her bag. A kind person had found it on the back
of a chair in a Cafe and after a quick look inside deduced it belonged
to somebody from England, they also made a guess that the person would
be catching a Ferry to England shortly so took it straight to the
ferry company office in time for it to be sent on board. That seemed a
pretty decent thing to do.
The person was anonymous so a thank you letter was written ,translated
and with the help of a journalist friend sent to a local newspaper in
the town to be published.

There is a good chance that you are not alone with this theft.

I'd also report it to the Police, at least it alerts them to the type of
thing being nicked in their area.
