Early Alliums
I'm astonished to note that my Allium 'Summer Drummer' bulbs are already
growing away. They were planted a bit late in October and are in pots, but I thought they'd come up late, not early .... certainly not this early! Is anyone else seeing early summer bulbs coming up? I'm concerned they won't flower at the right time, but there's not much I can do about it. -- Spider On high ground in SE London Gardening on heavy clay |

They got a bit of a shock yesterday when it snowed briefly. -- Regards, Martin Brown |

I'm hoping my alliums will hold off flowering until there are some bees to enjoy them, not to mention the fact that they're supposed to be scented. They're also meant to flower in August and extend the allium season. Anything could happen now. Thanks for your reply. -- Spider On high ground in SE London Gardening on heavy clay |

But it often has some flowers at this time, and also seems to be a lot hardier than is usually stated. -- Jeff |

Yes, I've known my Ceanothus (both thyr. repens and 'Concha') to put on a few late flowers, although this is usually August/September, not November. Fortunately, this shouldn't interfere with next year's flowering period. I don't know what to expect with my Alliums. I'll report back if I have flowers for Christmas. -- Spider On high ground in SE London Gardening on heavy clay |

David@a mixed up side of Swansea Bay Lovely pics, David, and some astonishing late colour. I seem to remember(?)you were interested in early-flowering daffs, but November with a flower-bud-elect is quite something. Obviously, I shouldn't be quite so surprised to find my allium in active growth! Do post a pic when that daff flowers, please. Do you know which one it is? -- Spider On high ground in SE London Gardening on heavy clay |

Talking of strange happenings, Iwas tidying up mmy blackberries an found on the end of a new growth (over 1m long) some ripe berries! Do I cut this growth back or just cut off the berries? Malcolm |

Malcolm You could leave them for the birds, but according to old superposition after Michaelmas (29th September) the devil takes possession of all blackberries left and they become poisonousness "She killed off her last husband by giving him Devil berry Pie, and I saw her yesterday out picking again" But according to this item the date is later http://www.cottagesmallholder.com/th...ckberries-466/ David @ a rainfree side of Swansea Bay |

My (nameless) ceanothus is flowering like mad at the moment; and the hardy fuchsias are having their best display ever. Janet. Yes, I've got some lovely colour on my hardy fuchsias. I shall take cuttings next year and increase the bounty. As I posted my first daffs are in flower. David@ the wet side of Swansea Bay |
