21st June is midsummer's day

No. That's the summer solstice, not the same thing at all. It's also

the
first day of summer.

LOL no problem Thank you for helping

Hang on if 21st June is the first day of summer, and 24th June is
mid-summers day, does this mean that we are officially admitting that UK
summer is actually only 6 days long ???

also be "midsummer's day"

Who came up with the 24th of June? That's the feast of St Johann, if I
remember rightly, and now to do with being the first, last or middle day of
Summer.

The 24th of June is a "quarter day", a day on which, traditianally,
bills are paid and the name of that quarter day is "Midsummer Day".
This is what causes a lot of the confusion between 21st and 24th June
I think.

No, Midsummer's day has always been 24th June and as such was always the
day when everyone would go to the top of the Beacon to watch the
sunrise. We didn't do that on the longest day, we did that on midsummer
day. We ignored the fact that Druids were cavorting at Stonehenge 3 days
earlier.

Who came up with the 24th of June?

well, in my part of the world (Worcs) it's traditional.

I think, but may be wrong here, that it is also the day of pershore
Fair, and the day that you cut the last asparagus.

That's the feast of St Johann, if I
remember rightly, and now to do with being the first, last or middle day of
Summer.

Totally agree. I always get annoyed with these pronouncements that
"today is offically the first day of spring/summer/whatever". Seasons
vary across the country. Spring comes much earlier in the Scilly Isles
than it does in Norfolk, I can tell you! Why do we *need* to identify
the seasons by dates. Seasons are natural, dates are man-made.

I think it is St John the Baptist's day. I have no idea why it is
called midsummer's day.

No, there's no connection between them, just a matter of different
traditions.

That's not as daft as it sounds. In Scotland Autumn lasts one day if you're
lucky.
