The fig thread returns!
Hi,
couple of things: (1) Sad and lonely things to do on holiday #297 - looking round Portmeirion on holiday, wonderful place, see http://www.portmeirion.wales.com/ and noticed a fig tree in a pot. Seeing as we have discussed lack of fruiting at length in previous posts I took a photograph http://www.chelsworth-lodge.nildram....s/DSC00090.JPG to show a tall gangling tree in the shade with no figs on. My conclusion was 'not enough sunlight' as I had seen fig trees growing in the grounds which had fruit on. (2) The first crop of fruit on my fig tree has stopped increasing in size but is not ripening. However the second crop is developing along with the new growth at the tips of the branches. I have temporarily stopped watering and feeding the fig in the hope that this will encourage it to ripen the fruit. Anyone got any ripe figs from an outdoor pot grown Brown Turkey yet this year? Cheers Dave R -- |

It too is a bit 'thin' and straggly looking. It stands in full sun all day and does have loads of fruit on it ! Dave R I've already had a few ripe figs and it looks as if there will be a couple more ripe today. I have been watering it a lot and have the pot standing in a reservoir so that it's kept constantly damp. This is an experiment as in other years it seems to have dried out to much and the leaves & fruit dropped of. Seems to be working this year. I'm a bit worried about the masses of second crop fruit. Will it ripen in time ??????? With the weather forecast warning of a summer long heatwave they just might :~))) Jenny |

My young tree had its first proper fig late last year, and it finally ripened last month. It was gorgeous! Tree is now covered in new little figs, so I don't know if those will do the same thing. Wonder if I should remove them now to encourage it to 'fig up' earlier next year? Victoria |

My young tree had its first proper fig late last year, and it finally ripened last month. It was gorgeous! My fig - not in a pot, but in a small bed in the middle of the terrace in pretty ropey soil, has just ripened a couple of small figs - delicious but small. This is early compared with last year, and some of the second crop are now hazelnut size, so I'm hoping! Tree is now covered in new little figs, so I don't know if those will do the same thing. Wonder if I should remove them now to encourage it to 'fig up' earlier next year? I've never thought of doing that. If anyone has, or if you do, I'd be interested to know if it is effective. -- Kay Easton Edward's earthworm page: http://www.scarboro.demon.co.uk/edward/index.htm |
