Default Help identifying a plant

Hi,

l've lost the plant label for a shrub that l bought in the spring and =
have forgotten its name. l can't remember if it recommended pruning.
It is deciduous with variegated green/cream leaves and beautiful red =
woody stems. It also has cream coloured berries.
Please can anyone help from this description?

Another question if l could, does anyone have a favourite web site where =
the care of plants are included and not just their descriptions? l've =
looked on the groups FAQ and trawled the net this morning but no luck.

Many thanks
Rose

Sounds like a Cornus of some variety.

Your plant sounds like a Cornus commonly known as Dogwood.

I cut mine down to about a foot in March to get lots of new growth for the
following autumn.

Dogwood has black berries and the stems aren't (very) red. Otherwise,
spot-on. G

I can visualise the shrub: the year-old stems are wine-red. My mother
had one - up the garden path.

gravelly voice

Have some Madeira, m'dear...

Probably cornus elegantissima; you can check it out in www.google/images.

Since you only planted it this spring it won't need pruning this year
(unless some branches get in the way of something else); the coloured
stems in winter are one of the attractions. When the stems get older
than 2 or 3 yrs, the bright colour fades and they get bushier. When that
happens you can prune them right down to ground level in late winter,
and scatter some manure round the soil surface. The plant will send up
lots of long brightly coloured stems in spring. It's very tough and
forgiving as well as beautiful.

Janet.

Ah, but found out now it's common name is 'Red-barked dogwood', thanks =
to Martin for providing its full title. Bit taken aback by its HxS =
300cm x 300cm, l can't imagine myself buying something this large but =
are these dimensions if it's not cut back each year?

Bring back memories m'dear? =

variagatedness so to speak, as they age?

Our school has one growing in the front. Since I've taken over the grounds
maintenance from the Parks Department we now know how big it can grow if it
is not pruned every year ;-) Had to give it a bit of a trim yesterday as we
were getting complaints but left as much as I could so we can enjoy its
flowers and berries before seeing the red stems in full glory. It'll get a
heavy prune in the spring.
