Smug, self satisfied, complacent, um.....
I have planned my veg garden for next year, picked the seeds I require (not
able to order as Suttons web page has problems :-( ) Dug over, manured or limed all empty beds, never managed that before, but nature has been very kind. Feeling very complacent I was walking my territory when on passing my brussels, horror of horrors my Xmas dinner was being eaten by cabbage white caterpillars, checked calendar, yes it is mid November. So smugness etc waned, and I thought, what drought, flood or pestilence will nature come up with to balance the last few weeks? Cheers John T |

I still have lobelia, annual rudbeckia, early-type clematis and fuchsia in full bloom, as well as a few flowers on an exochorda bride which is supposed to flower only in May. No doubt having said this a frost will come in tonight and cut down the lot! |

I know the feeling, last week I dug one of our allotments, raked it nice and smooth, it looked like a big earth pillow, very satisfying, felt good. Two day later I go down there to find hardly a square inch without a fox paw print, deep holes dug at random, hardly looks like it's been dug and raked at all. :-( -- Regards Bob Use a useful Screen Saver... http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ and find intelligent life amongst the stars, there's bugger all down here. |

Cheers John T Good evening, Me and my neighbour spent a confused minute or two watching a Red Admiral (I assume that is what it was, as it was mainly red!) fluttering between our gardens today. I'm no expert on butterflies - or insects full stop, for that matter - but I assume that butterflies should not be flying around this time of year - or for that matter a bee shouldn't have been flying around the living room today! writes Me and my neighbour spent a confused minute or two watching a Red Admiral (I assume that is what it was, as it was mainly red!) No! Red Admirals are mainly black ;-) Basically black with a bright red stripe along the edge of the wing. Peacocks are obvious - big 'eyes' on the wing like on a peacock feather, though they are brownish colours rather than greens and blues. fluttering between our gardens today. They need heat to be active, so the warmer the autumn, the longer they can be around. There's still quite a lot of insects around up here (Yorks) -- Kay Easton Edward's earthworm page: http://www.scarboro.demon.co.uk/edward/index.htm |
