Yes,

the flowers are hardy but the flowerbuds not, so it is advisable to

cut back
the leaves in februari and place some airy dry mulching around the

old
leaves.

Here in Holland the flowering of Helleborers is depending on the

kind of
winter. Some winters are to cold and there are just a few late

flowers left.

Rene,

Sorry, I don't agree with you. We had temperatures of minus 12 last
winter and our hellebores were marvellous. No damage at all and
superb flowering. I did nothing to protect the buds. I think that
is part of the joy of them.

Hello Krilb,
I have never protected my Hellebores and have suffered no frost damage thus
far. I garden on high ground on London clay.

Is it advisable to protect the new blooms, which are now coming up,
from frost using, say a leafy mulch?

We live in North london.

I think that the damaging of the flowers is most when we have a slow start
of the winter like now and the buds are coming and then a real winter with
15 degrees of frost.

I am growing hellebores since 10 jears and I think that 4 jears the flowers
were frozen or minimalised

Winters are probably colder in Holland

It depends on which part of the Netherlands you are comparing to which
part of the UK.
