cutting grass yet?

Tempting to cut it, but not sure if it's too early - it is a brand new lawn laid last August. Cut it a couple of days ago after a prolonged fine spell. Just in time before the snow. The garden looks loads better as the grass was getting quite long. The grass in general is in a sorry state; the drought last year left burned bits and the weeds are growing back faster than the grass. I put some seed down in December because everything seemed to be growing including grass and weeds, but this has not been a success. Will try again when the weather is a bit warmer. Anyone remember the good old days when grasss didn't grow in the winter? I even remember the days before the locals grew it in greenhouses and smoked it all the year round. -- Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad |

Just to even it up really, although it was getting quite long in places. Thanks to my lovely Countax -- gift to self last year -- I can cut in the wet, but _too_ wet just leaves muck everywhere... -E -- Emery Davis You can reply to by removing the well known companies |

The message
from "al" contains these words: Anyone cutting their grass yet? It's been so damn cold this last week that it's nice and firm today for a change (ie. virtually frozen!) instead of mushy with water. Tempting to cut it, but not sure if it's too early - it is a brand new lawn laid last August. I've bought the petrol and so long as the mower starts, the first cut is scheduled for tomorrow now the ground is dry and and grass definitely growing. Janet (Isle of Arran). |

Tempting to cut it, but not sure if it's too early - it is a brand new lawn laid last August. Ours was cut on Thursday once the sun had dried overnight damp from it. First cut was about four weeks ago and it needs another cut now. For the last few years the 'no cutting' season here seems to be about 6/8 weeks :-( -- Robert |

But was yours laid only last August, Sacha? When you say laid, Al, do you mean from turf or from seed? A *mature* lawn can be mowed at any time of year providing it is not waterlogged or frosted but until it starts growing strongly in the spring it is wise to keep the cut 'long'!! -- Jane Ransom in Lancaster.
