Default can I suggest a new FAQ?

On the back of my enquiry and others I have read here
would it be possible while things are relatively quiet in the garden!!!
for the FAQ ers to create a favoured gardens; nurseries; garden centres FAQ?

I know there is a suppliers but often some of the best nurseries are tucked
away
with limited monies for advertising - and personal recommendations are so
much better

Then anyone about to go somewhere may find places that are good to visit
and as others are found through the year they can be added???

just a thought

FAQ?

Jill, we and friends have used a nursery on the S. coast for years and
always been very happy with the plants and service but Iris used them once
on my recommendation and had a nightmare. It would need some care in the
choice of nursery etc. and a good disclaimer clause. :-(

Sounds a reasonable suggestion, though not really a FAQ a such.

Didn't someone do a Great Britsh Gardens website a while back?

Of course there is no such thing as 'the FAQers' , just whoever
volunteers to do something.

Are you volunteering...?

There's a short list of links to err, let's call them
'popular', gardens in the UK/RoI on one of the urg pages, but if
someone wants to create a list of urglers' favourite GCs, then I'm
happy enough to turn it into a webpage and upload it.

Its a very very tricky one.. Favourite may not be to anothers taste,..
if your into say bamboos you may have a 'favourite' nursery, but others
may abhor the stuff so probably wouldn't like it!-)

Its easy enough to find suppliers of a fave type once you start looking
and talking to people IMO.

Mebbe some guidelines on how to do this?

What's the problem? If it's someone's favourite then surely that's
enough - who said everyone else had to agree?

But it's always useful to have recommendations.

Mebbe some guidelines on how to do this?

My recommendation is that if someone thinks this a good idea they should
say so and ask for recommendations. The compiler should decide if
something goes in or out.

Most of us know about big garden centres within our travelling reach - what
would be good is a section on small specialist outfits.
Here's a couple for starters:
http://www.hardycyclamen.com/cyclamen1/index.html
lovely people to deal with and a lovely genus much easier to grow than most
folks think. They grow all of their own stock so wild stocks aren't being
raped in sensitive ecosystems. Quality is good, advice is reliable and some
good priced offers on buying reasonable quantities of slightly smaller corms
during the dormant season (early summer).

http://www.bluebellnursery.com/
Again nice people to deal with, good range of interesting stuff. They're
very good at small mail orders and they come beautifully packed.

More where these came from if it's usuful.

Can I nominate Neil Thompson's nursery at Scotland, near Matlock,
between the expensive Tansley Garden and Watery Wet Things Centre and
the slightly less naff, and still family run, Scotland Garden Centre and
natty coffee shop?

thats what I meant - thanks
I enjoy "garden centres" but its the wee places that may not be able to
advertise in all the obvious places that can often be real gems.

Future Foods is a small independent mail order supplier specialising in
rare and unusual edible plants. Please note that we are a seed company
only - we do not supply produce.
What we offer is seeds of fruits & greens, roots & tubers, salads &
herbs. Unlike most other seed companies, we also offer fungi (as
inoculated logs and as spore) and fermentation starter cultures, as well
as a few horticultural sundries - labels, seed boxes and so on to help
our customers get the most from our products. We can easily mail to all
countries within the EU, and to other countries too, but for that we do
need to charge a little more to cover postage.

Interesting multipurpose plants!-)

The Agroforestry Research Trust is a non-profit making charity,
registered in England, which researches into temperate agroforestry and
into all aspects of plant cropping and uses, with a focus on tree, shrub
and perennial crops.
We produce several publications and a quarterly journal, and also sell
plants, seeds and Rootrainers.

A superb selection of multipurpose plants.

As well as these I also find the specialist suppliers (ususally the
collection holders & growers as well) associated with the NCCPG (also
known as 'plant heritage') very useful if searching out a plant
belonging to a certain Genus.
They are a bit like the heritage seed library of the ornamental world!-)
NCCPG also tends to do some fantastic stuff at their plant sales. Well
worth going to!-) Contact the NCCPG for more info: http://www.nccpg.com/

You may also find the 'martex' directory useful in addition to google
when tracking down suppliers.

I believe they have to be members of the Horticultural Trades Association to
be in that which is very expensive for smaller nurseries.

Jon

How things change ;~))) I used to go there when it was a *real* nursery.
Superb bare rooted plants - tough as old boots. Rhodos layered with rocks on
the shoots to hold 'em down. Old boys with old macs and sacks over their
shoulders dug the plants up for you ........... sigh...................
