buy quality from specialist mower shops - link:
this is a good read at the very least, but i have always tried to
encourage people buying lawn equipment etc.,. to buy from a specialist shop and that they should find a shop where expereince abounds (can be hard but listen for word of mouth in your locale). the models sold in discounter shops are special models made for that price range, it is a little sad that rover and masport find they have to grasp on to market share and provide models for those markets. the story is about snapper we used to sell them then they stopped exporting to australia ?? but a good rule of thumb is buy the manufacturers who don't sell their integrity out by competing in the discount market. when i was a mechanic it was a trap then for the buyer purchasing a mower in a box and i reckon that won't have changed the trap may even have gotten bigger. the link: http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/...n_snapper.html With peace and brightest of blessings, len -- "Be Content With What You Have And May You Find Serenity and Tranquillity In A World That You May Not Understand." http://www.users.bigpond.com/gardenlen1 |

So I ring Electrolux the distributer of them in Australia. Turns out it is now run by Husqvarna (but still Electrolux just the outdoor division). So I ring them and i find out I can only buy that part from a Husqvarna dealer. I ring my local dealer only to find out he doesn't deal Jonsered parts. So eventually I find a Jonsered dealer who wants $90 for the coil. The coil is made by Phelon in America and they have only 7 distrubuters throughout the world. Guess what none in Australia! So I am thinking the part I want is worth $20 but after travelling all over the world and going through so many hands and so much gst I am getting ripped off. Is like car parts and pvc retic fittings. So looks like I have to pay for guys expensive missus's and Mercedes Benz while I live on a beer budget. Rant End. |

g'day loosecannon,
yes that is quiet common in garden equipment departments, i had a jonsered22.5cc brushcutter it had a mitsubishi motor on it and gave full on service requiring only the odd spark plug here and there. and why would anyone buy a motorised product from say eloctrolux?? they make vacuum cleaners hey so how do you know who the original maker of the machine or it's engine is?? like one mower company from when it was aussie owned and run by the family, to now when it isn't they only every made rotary mowers but they sell a full range of garden equipment. but the thing i am trying to get gardeners to think about is do some homework and stear clear of badge models, because the original manufacturer of the item will be vague to begin with and buying from discounters they just quote from the glossy pamphlets provided by the onwer of the brand name, and have absolutely no experience on the reliability or other of anything they sell. or any advice on proper maintanance. ther are some classic examples of garden machinery in the market place mostly at the discounters all sorts of names some familiar for their equipment in otehr fields, tried to research one such mower and could get no handle on who manufactured the frame or the motor having now seen one i can see all. people realy don't know what they are buying. also manufacturers who provide their own models or badge models to the discounters are the ones, that i am saying to people about when you buy their equipment be careful, these manufacturers have sold out quality and integrity of sometimes good equipment for the magic buck, plus they aren't supporting those specialist retailer who are selling their naturally more expensive top of the range quality models. snipped With peace and brightest of blessings, len -- "Be Content With What You Have And May You Find Serenity and Tranquillity In A World That You May Not Understand." http://www.users.bigpond.com/gardenlen1 |

They own the Westinghouse, Kelvinator, Simpson and Frigidaire brands and many others as well as their Electrolux vacuum cleaners. As well they have their finger in many other pies as the reference to Jonsered and Husqvarna show. However, you are basically correct, they have little interest in supplying replacement parts and any examination of their business methods would show that they are reducing their service and parts commitment in Australia to a minimum. Blessings to you too. |

Dear Lady Gardener, I thought that your comment was advice to the effect that the loosecannon (always dangerous types) should exercise some ingenuity and improvise with an alternative coil for his broken toy. Which was my thought, but I decided that he would not appreciate it. But he has come back with an inscrutable reply. Is it really in your Fathers's shed. Did I miss something between the lines? |

So sorry leftred - there was a lot in-between the lines on that one, added to which I had a very blonde moment and replied to group rather than to Loosecannon. The shed to which I referred is indeed my father's shed and is known to both the loosecannon and myself. It can be a place of ingenuity and improvisation. However there is the infinite possibility that the ailing equipment will never see light of day again, or if it does it may be reincarnated as a bird feeder, a pedal car, a talking donkey or a magicians cupboard. j. |

Egads I had this terrible thought that my hedgetrimmer will become a swordfish and be packed up and sent to the US of A. Only to be discarded in the snow (now 15feet deep) by your nephew. Me wants a magicians cupboard but I'll pass on the donkey it talks from both ends. Rant infinitum LC MMVI |

Re the coil, go and see your "friendly" mower mechanic, and ask him if there's an equivalant coul on the market. I bet ya there is. Or a wrecked machine which has one still usable. |
