camellia problems
I have been reading this ng a little lately, and thought I might become
involved. I'm only a novice gardener, so please bear with me :-) I was intrigued with the thread about germinating seeds, very interesting it was. I have some problems with camellia leaves, it is probably best to look at them here http://kt.alphalink.com.au/camellia/ (digital cameras are wonderful) I'm in Melbourne, just wondering, looking at the pics what your opinion might be. I also have a question about strawberries & tomatoes, but that can wait for now.... Thanks Gerard |

Looks like it is burnt at the top. Most likely by that air conditioner that is above it. Ever felt the heat coming out the back of an A/C unit? |

Now to decide which is to go g Although I have 2 other camellias in the same bed about 2 meters either side and they are displaying some leaves with the same symptoms. Oh btw, they are facing east. There has been a couple of scorchers the last 3 weeks, and the Christmas/new year hot days we had here in Melb. were in Hobart and they didn't get a drink, I think that might have contributed to the problem, Oh well off with the old in with the new so they say. But I agree with you about the A/C, I'll have to give that one a little thought. Thanks Gerard |

Thanks Gerard I would have said the A/C unit too, but considering the others 2metres either side are showing signs of it, then it may have only contributed to it, making the one in front of the A/C worse. With the added information of the heat/lack of water, and the fact they are facing east, I am guessing the dew on the leaves was hit by the sun early causing the dew to heat up and burn the leaves. Add to that the lack of water to the plant too. The hot air from the A/C burnt it just a little more. Just a guess anyway Good luck |

camellia problems
I have a camellia in a pot showing rather similar symptoms. It was
suggested to me that the nutrient mix in the soil was a possible cause. I have not got around to repotting yet, so can't confirm if this is a cause. Has yours been subject to a change in soil conditions? Joanne Gerard wrote in message ... I have been reading this ng a little lately, and thought I might become involved. Has yours been subject to a change in soil conditions? Hi Joanne, Not really, a little of all purpose plant food and sulphate of ammonia for the foliage. Reading the thread, I think it is just the variation of temperature burning the leaves, not to mention the A/C. I had a look tonight as it (the A/C) has been going most of the afternoon, and with the north wind, the hot air from the A/C is directed right on the mainly affected area of the camellia. A little prune will fix it. Sorry I can't help you much. Gerard Thanks to the rest of the posters....... g |

I haven't looked at your pics, but I'm guessing sunburn. Only outside leaves? And on the top and side exposed to the sun? I was surprised a few years back when some of our camelias developed brown leaves after a day of scorching heat, yet they had not been burnt in a dozen previous summers. Don't remove the burnt leaves. You will just be exposing leaves even more tender to the next day of extremes. Let the burnt leaves be, so they can give some protection for the remainder of the Summer. -- John Savage (for email, replace "ks" with "k" and delete "n") |

leaves? And on the top and side exposed to the sun? Yep, but the A/C has contrubited to the burning, I investigated the A/C on the last scorcher and with the hot exhaust from the A/C combined with the northerly wind the top of the camelia copped it. I was surprised a few years back when some of our camelias developed brown leaves after a day of scorching heat, yet they had not been burnt in a dozen previous summers. I have noticed that, maybe due to the dry season? But they have been regurally watered! Don't know, but they'll bounce back :-) Don't remove the burnt leaves. You will just be exposing leaves even more tender to the next day of extremes. Let the burnt leaves be, so they can give some protection for the remainder of the Summer. Thought of that, when the warmer weather dies down I'll give them a prune...... Keep cool Gerard |
