FWIW

Windows XP does away completely with the Windows Registry scheme, which in
my mind is one of the touchiest aspects of the Windows OS.

Many people don't realize that, given enough time, eventually you have to do
a clean sweep and a total reinstall of Windows. Maintenance tasks like
updating the Registry and defragmenting the hard drive can delay the
process, but eventually it must be done. Hard drives can also just plain
wear out, mostly because of the heat/cool sequence over a period of years...

I've about had it with MSWin.

All;

In response to David Bockman's post .......

FYI .... Two years ago (before XP hit the shelves) Microsoft awarded me the
title of "WindowsXP Associate Expert".
This doesn't mean much, but it does indicate that I have some experience
with XP.
There are only 600 "Experts" worldwide.

All flavors of Windows have a registry.
As each new OS hits the streets, the registry gets bigger and bigger.
For example, the registry in my new Windows 2003 Server is in excess of 50
Mbytes !!
I bet that's bigger than most peoples hard drives !!

MS has gone out of their way to install features which ensure users don't
directly interact with his/her registry.
In fact, I'd suggest that most users stay away from their registry.
Small, unintentional errors will bring the whole system to it's knees.

"Defragging" your hard drive is a thing of the past.
With XP's NTFS file system, defragging is not necessary.

If anyone in this group needs minor help with their XP systems please
contact me off-group and I'll try to help.
Please don't inundate me !!

Well, I feel foolish,

Sorry for the mistake with regard to Windows XP and the Windows Registry...
I was relying on casual conversations with a computer enthusiast who helped
me with my recent total reinstall. I probably misinterpreted what he was
telling me.

Is XP's NTFS any different from Win2K NTFS? Or WinNT NTFS?
If it isn't, then I find it strange that with WinNT there wasn't a built
in defrag tool, whereas on Win2K there is one. I wouldn't know about XP,
but since XP differs from Win2K in only a minor version (both are a
major version 5), I guess they're not _that_ different. I could be
wrong, of course. You never know with MS.

The only time I hear people complaining about their computers not
working is when there is some issue with a PC or with Windows or
something like that. So, it's a tradeoff. IMHO the higher price for
software is worth it. With a PC, you get cheap operating systems, cheap
software, and every time you turn a corner there is a problem with it.
Cheap. You get what you pay for.

I've used both Macs and Windows PC's professionally for 15 years. Never
been any choice between them in my mind for cost and ease of
configuration. Macs are for people who can afford them and don't want to
be bothered with dealing with any of the hiccups that both these complex
machines can throw up. Graphic designers who are too set in their ways
to upgrade to the superior platform also still tend to mistakenly favour
Macs.

Windows machines are currently ahead in all the important areas except
looks.

It's a personal viewpoint, but I do build and use them for work on some
pretty demanding applications like 3D animation and video editing. I've
moved up to Win2000 and WinXP on my 2 machines and am really happy with
them both.

Craig (and Kevin)

I used Macs for 16 years, and accomplished a number of firsts for the
machine (I was an Alt Sysop for the CompuServe Mac User group.) During that
time, because I was pushing the envelope, and doing some system hacks, I got
just about every error message the mac could produce, including the dreaded
"chimes of doom".

I switched to Windoze machines because of some applications I needed about 5
years ago, and I am convinced that any dollar savings are more than made up
by the difficulty of keeping windows out of the weeds.

My wife still clings to her clamshell Ibook, and was deeply unhappy when she
had to use an old Compaq laptop for her web access.

If I didn't have such an investment in software, I'd probably go bac to
Macs.

Regards,

Bart

Some of those guys have little choice, since their Macs are the entry point
for machines (Typesetting & composition, for example) that cost more than 20
times as much as the Mac.
