Fixing tiller
Hi, I have an old tiller that won't start. There is no spark, what could
be wrong with it? My dad took the coil out a couple years ago and was going to test it but never got around to it. How would I test the coil or should I just buy a new one? http://members.cox.net/michaelshaffer/tiller1.jpg http://members.cox.net/michaelshaffer/tiller2.jpg thanks Michael Shaffer |

The older tiller engines Briggs, Clinton, Tecumseh had points and condensers which would quit quite suddenly. Usually replacing with a tune up kit fixed the problem. Of course to do this , you have to pull the flywheel on most of them. The newer models with electronic ignition are less troublesome but I don't know anyway to test when the unit is bad, The only one I have repaired (Briggs on a lawn mower) I just replaced the unit. |

Fixing tiller
Hey, it's a Briggs and Stratton, 5hp model #130902. How do i know if
it's a points and condenser or something else? I've worked a lot on cars but not small engines.. FarmerDill wrote: Hi, I have an old tiller that won't start. coils rarely go bad. Usually its the points or the kill switch. If its not
one of these then its the coil. "Michael Shaffer" wrote in message ... Hi, I have an old tiller that won't start. There is no spark, what could be wrong with it? In that case take it to the shop, before you do clean it up.

MTD owns them now. that old 5 hp was a workhorse. put a magnetron coil on it and be done with it. i wouldn't be shocked if the tank was rusty on the inside and it needs carb. work though. if you want to test the coil get an ohm-meter, should have low resistance on the primary and higher on the secondary. What do you think it wrong with it that it's not getting spark? What are the chances it's the coil or something else? I called a local place and they said the "points" was probably bad and wanted $30. I don't really plan on using the tiller though, so I just put it back in the crawlspace. Thanks.. Does this look like the Magnetron ignition I would want (it's
at the very bottom) http://www.manddsmallengine.com/briggs/kits.html Chip Stein wrote: Michael Shaffer wrote in message ... What do you think it wrong with it that it's not getting spark? Pull the sparkplug put it back on the coil wire. Hold the rubber boot ,
touch the plug at the hexagon part to the head and yank the rope. If it sparks, the plug, ya got no point problems. Watch out ya don't get zapped. Try a new plug if no spark. Also try a point file to file between the points. All motors need : Fuel , Air and Spark. Simple ! "Michael Shaffer" wrote in message ... Thanks..
