Default Garden site operating as multiple "seperate" businesses - scam?

While looking for some gardening supplies online today, I discovered
several different retailers, all claiming to be different businesses
with different locations and contact info. However, every single one
of them had the exact same site structure, the same scripting, and the
items offered at each site are exactly the same. If one site is out of
something, every other site is also out.

What is going on? Is this some sort of scam?

Here is a list of all of the sites I have found like this so far:

It's not necessarily a scam. If you take business courses you probably
learn about it. I forget what it's called though.

Having worked for a service like this before, I think I recognise it
as a cookie-cutter operation. Sellsonic (note the "Powered By" at the
bottom of the first page of the sites) obviously uses the same
formula for all the sites to save money and sells ready-made websites
to smaller gardening businesses. We did the same thing with insurance
companies. Instead of having to charge for orginal artwork, site
design, etc., most places like this let you choose from a portfolio of
site designs and ready made graphics. Keeps the costs down, but still
allows the business to have a nice looking site. I seriously doubt
it's a scam.

I think it's more of a case where company A is a distributor for companies
B, C, D. The distributor gets a steady cash stream, while the retailers
handle sales and advertising and are usually free to set prices as they see
fit. Of course it's also entirely possible, as you (or gardenwatchdog)
say, that the distributor owns all the outlets.

Follow the link I posted and it's very clear. If you do a whois search
you'll find that EVERY web address is owned by DIFFERENT people.

hmm, let's 60 sec to whipout sassy reply, vs. search for whois client on
computer and if not found search internet for one, go to website download
client, compile if necessary, run program, go to plant website,
systematically look up each address, cut and paste results into editor for
easy comparisons, report findings, include caveat that results may not be
certified if listed addresses have not been validated by some trusted
system.

I've had asparagus grow fast than that. :^)

The degree of difficulty you assign the task is a give away.

It's not difficult so much as unnecessary and uninteresting, and without
the tools I normally would use for such searches, yes, it is more
difficult. You could mulch your tomatoes with a blanket of AOL discs but
why would you if you could pick up some nice red plastic later in the week.
Or better yet, con some guy with too much time on his hands into delivering
it for you.

I suppose if you have kids that whine about mowing the lawn, you'd think
they were incompetent at handling machinery.

Aside from that, my Internet skills were good enough to present a paper on
the subject of Internet transmissions at an international conference for
computer professionals, so nah nah bhlaahthwppp.

P.S. [rec.garden-y remarks] Soak your disease free seeds overnight in a
weak tea solution. The tannic acid will help weaken the seed coat and aid
in germination.

Look the domains up at http://geektools.com/cgi-bin/proxy.cgi and
you can see who owns them.

From what I saw, Mr. Slater has been VERY busy. Technically it's
not a scam ... it perhaps gives him some sort of an advntage in
the search engines. I'm getting "connection refused" when I try
to look at the sites, so they might be running an intrusive
JavaScript or be on my list of obnoxious pop-up sites.

Traceroute on AWBROWN.COM deadends with a DNS error at Exodus,
whichleads me to believe it's all running off a home server on
exodus, or on the other side of xodus.
