Garden site operating as multiple "seperate" businesses - scam?

: While looking for some gardening supplies online today, I discovered several different retailers, all claiming to be different businesses with different locations and contact info. However, every single one of them had the exact same site structure, the same scripting, and the items offered at each site are exactly the same. If one site is out of something, every other site is also out. What is going on? Is this some sort of scam? It's not necessarily a scam. If you take business courses you probably learn about it. I forget what it's called though. -- Salty |

Garden site operating as multiple "seperate" businesses - scam?
Having worked for a service like this before, I think I recognise it
as a cookie-cutter operation. Sellsonic (note the "Powered By" at the bottom of the first page of the sites) obviously uses the same formula for all the sites to save money and sells ready-made websites to smaller gardening businesses. We did the same thing with insurance companies. Instead of having to charge for orginal artwork, site design, etc., most places like this let you choose from a portfolio of site designs and ready made graphics. Keeps the costs down, but still allows the business to have a nice looking site. I seriously doubt it's a scam. Go to: http://gardenwatchdog.com/whoownswhat.php It tells which companies own which companies. For example: Gardens Alive! owns: * Gardens Alive! * Audubon Workshop * Breck's Bulbs * Flower of the Month Club * Gurney Seed & Nursery * Henry Field Seed & Nursery * Michigan Bulb * mySEASONS Garden Solutions * Spring Hill Nurseries International Garden Products owns: * International Garden Products * Briggs Nursery, Inc. * Langeveld Bulb Co Inc * Little Valley Wholesale Nursery * Skagit Gardens * Thompson and Morgan (UK) * Vandenberg Bulbs * Weeks Wholesale Roses Grower, Inc -- Pardon my spam deterrent; send email to Cheers, Steve Henning in Reading, PA USA http://www.users.fast.net/~shenning |

: http://gardenwatchdog.com/whoownswhat.php It tells which companies own which companies. I think it's more of a case where company A is a distributor for companies B, C, D. The distributor gets a steady cash stream, while the retailers handle sales and advertising and are usually free to set prices as they see fit. Of course it's also entirely possible, as you (or gardenwatchdog) say, that the distributor owns all the outlets. - Salty |

If you do a whois search you'll find that EVERY web address is owned by DIFFERENT people. Sheesh.... It's not difficult so much as unnecessary and uninteresting, and without the tools I normally would use for such searches, yes, it is more difficult. You could mulch your tomatoes with a blanket of AOL discs but why would you if you could pick up some nice red plastic later in the week. Or better yet, con some guy with too much time on his hands into delivering it for you. I suppose if you have kids that whine about mowing the lawn, you'd think they were incompetent at handling machinery. Aside from that, my Internet skills were good enough to present a paper on the subject of Internet transmissions at an international conference for computer professionals, so nah nah bhlaahthwppp. -- Salty P.S. [rec.garden-y remarks] Soak your disease free seeds overnight in a weak tea solution. The tannic acid will help weaken the seed coat and aid in germination. |

What is going on? Is this some sort of scam? Look the domains up at http://geektools.com/cgi-bin/proxy.cgi and you can see who owns them. From what I saw, Mr. Slater has been VERY busy. Technically it's not a scam ... it perhaps gives him some sort of an advntage in the search engines. I'm getting "connection refused" when I try to look at the sites, so they might be running an intrusive JavaScript or be on my list of obnoxious pop-up sites.
