Sorry to say it Sue, but I am beginning to believe so, too.

I mean, an idiot suggests that *I* should go out and buy a .35 cal

Lying ****ing asshole.
YOU asked him (Jim Dauven) why he *needs* such a gun.
I chastised you for asking such a stupid question.
You got mad and started stamping your feet.
Now, you're lying again, to a socialist.
Both of you should be horse whipped publicly.

And I see you know even less. But then, that's not unexpected for the

It only takes 600 calories (assumning that is correct) if
there is no division of labor. It certainly doesn't take
600 calories to put a loaf of bread on a modern American's
table.

Assuming for a moment that the (highly speculative) figure of 600 calories
is a good one, it takes 600 calories whether one hand or many does the
planting, harvesting, grinding, baking. But the figure of 600 calories is
grossly distorted.

I make $8 an hour, gross, so it takes me about 15 minutes labor to put a
loaf of bread on the table. I am poorly paid, for most people it takes even
less effort. I don't think I expend 2,400 calories an hour on my job ...
almost no one does (19kCal a day? Not.) Frankly, once I do the math
(divvying up how much I eat in a day by 24 and applying 15 minutes worth to
the goal of putting a loaf of bread on the table), I would say that it
takes about 15-20 calories to produce a loaf of bread. This includes all
the plowing, all the planting, all the tending, all the harvesting, all the
transportation, all the grinding, all the cooking, and all the delivery to
the shelves of my local store ... because that's what my 15 minutes buys,
cash on the barrel head.

My grandfather ran a family farm and didn't eat the calories the
survivalists are claiming. Grannie was a little on the thin side, but
Gramps was pretty hefty. I've seen what he ate. It was long in carbs, and
veggies, but had some meat, too. Breakfast was normally a few small boiled
potates with fresh butter, a bowl of oatmeal and a couple eggs. Lunch was a
full meal of dinner leftovers and dinner was an event. He was
self-suficient on 25 acres of WV hillside. That included woodlot, ponds
(two), milk cows, a few pigs, a hen house and a horse or two. In the early
days (until the trees were cleared off enough of the land), it included an
ox but no horses.

I've stolen eggs from the hens and slaughtered them ,too. I never got in on
any of the larger livestock slaughtering, but Gramps had a boiling pit for
getting the hair off pigs and a smokehouse for curing them. They made their
own soap and canned a BOATLOAD of chickens, pork and beef for the winter.

Never underestimate the power of a bean. Down on the farm, they ate
sparingly of animal protein but heavily of beans, green and dried. They
were pretty healthy.

Someone has made a very good point a couple of times. If a 'survivalist'
doesn't already plant at least a garden, in the event of a disaster, he may
not live long enough to see his first harvest. Gardens / farms take time.
You have to plant BEFORE the troubles start. Even if the current garden
does nothing but stave off starvation for a year ... that is enough. In a
year you could have the larger plot planted, harvested and in the root
cellar. There will be a lot of people heading into the fields with guns.
Even Michigans abundant deer herds would not survive that sort of pressure
for a second season.

Plant now and, if you are planning on being self-sufficient in an
environment of widespread scarcity, plan on being a generalist.

Just my 2 cents worth. G'night.

Going to a plant only diet would result in an absurd waste of
resources as the parts of the plants not usable by humans end up in
the compost heap instead of being fed to animals. Not to suggest that
the present methods used by the meat industry is all that economical
of resources. I wouldn't know.

You were on a roll there, what happened to putting the parts that the human
cannot eat back into the soil and also the parts he HAS eaten? Human manure
is very rich and composts readily.
