I would like some ideas for what to plant under/by pines - a variety of types. I am interested in plants and shrubs, and they can be for shade and part-sun.

Cyclamen hederifolium would do well right up next to the trunks of the
pines where nothing else would be likely to flourish, and will bloom in
autumn when everything else is getting ready to die back. I doubt any
other cyclamen than C. hederifolium would thrive in your zone, but this
one has at least two varieties, pink-flowering and white-flowering.

By the way, turn off your "mime" format feature which does not work for
UseNet, & renders your posts difficult to find amidst all the extra junk
that ends up in your posts when you leave mime on.

Hi Judy, welcome. How would you characterize the shade and soil conditions under your pines? Is it a dense forest, with nothing but pine litter on the ground now, or is it somewhat more open?

A good source for this is a Kentucky guide to ground covers. Don't be
mislead by the title, because they have ground covers that are 6' tall.
When they mean are plants that will fill in areas such as this. They
list what is drought tolerant, shade tolerant and which require shade.
Then you can compare the plants they list with your hardiness zone. The

Hi Dave,

In some areas, where the previous home owners removed the lower branches, the area is open, and I have gotten some day lilies to grow. I also think I found some sort of geranium growing. It gets a lot of air (windy in the winter, actually) and definitely some afternoon sun. Other areas are much shadier, and have more pine litter since the lower branches are intact and rather thick.

Thanks - to you and the others with the good ideas. The cyclamen sounds wonderful, and I have just ordered two Cornus florida, so I have some new ideas for them!
