We had a discussion about off-line newsreading a couple of weeks ago. In case you missed that one, one of the ways people deal with dial-up is to automatically download the whole group, and then read it off-line. The advantage is that you don't tie-up the phone line while you're reading, and deciding what messages to download. If someone goes and posts a binary to a non-binary group, it will automatically be queued-up with the rest of the messages for download. The options are to either put up with some self-centered person who doesn't understand that their binary file doesn't belong in a discussion group, or take the time every, single day to manually choose which messages to download, and which messages not to download. In other words just because you've found a way to lessen the impact of selfish posters that works for you doesn't mean that your method will work for everyone, or even anyone, else. It's like saying I'm a good enough driver that I can avoid getting hit by a drunk driver, so why can't everyone else? Please don't justify the selfish actions of others by blaming the victims.. -- Warren H. ========== Disclaimer: My views reflect those of myself, and not my employer, my friends, nor (as she often tells me) my wife. I fell off my chair on that one! Thanks for the chuckle; I really needed that! Loved the picture. I'm on dial-up at 26400 kbs but it was worth it. Also, thanks to the others for pointing out how all this usenet crap works. I must admit, I had no idea what the reasons were for not posting pictures or HTML. I just thought it was some control-freak moderator type stuff. Now I understand. Gracias! -- "I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them." I just thought it was some control-freak moderator type stuff. Now I understand. Gracias! There are too many people out there who only know how they work, and what they want. They flaunt the conventions, and post binaries in non-binary groups, use html, top-post replies, fail to trim quotations, or don't quote at all. They do this because they don't see how the conventions, customs, and societal rules are relevant, and unilaterally decide to ignore them. Reactions to those folks are why sometimes the reaction to someone who honestly didn't know seems overly strong. There are actually some good reasons behind all of the "rules". Not everyone is using the newest version of some feature-bloated Windows software, yet because so many people are, it's sometimes easy to forget about client-side issues such as usenet software that doesn't like html. And since most people have never been a server admin, they have little frame of reference of the server-side issues involved. There are relatively few moderated newsgroups. The majority of newgroups exist only because people follow conventions. There are some newsgroups out there where convention was ignored to the point that the name of the group has become meaningless. They now are nothing but spam and punks who think their anarchists. They got that way because the neighbors didn't care. Most of the time seeing the conventions modeled is all newcomers need. "Gee, I see 24,000 posts, and not one binary. I guess I shouldn't be posting binaries here." But occasionally someone either decides to go ahead and do something "just this once", or they do it because they didn't even notice that no one else does that kind of thing. And that's when huge threads like this pop-up. Is it a distraction to spend so much time on the mechanics of Usenet, and it's societal conventions? Maybe. But based on the number of posts so quickly made on this subject, it's not something that isn't of interest to many. No one has done anything horrific. No one died because of a couple of html posts, or because of a binary (that was filtered out of the feed many people get) that was posted. It was the equivalent of walking down the hall on the left instead of the right. No one is banished from the hallway because they walked on the wrong side, even if there was a minor collision. We all just continue on, a little more aware that we're not the only one who's using the hallway. -- Warren H. ========== Disclaimer: My views reflect those of myself, and not my employer, my friends, nor (as she often tells me) my wife. Also, some people skim through newsgroups by hitting CTRL+U, which automatically takes them to the next message. This is particularly helpful when there are a lot of older posts on the server and you don't want to keep scrolling to find the next unread one. If an HTML or binary post is among them, the CTRL+U method will download it before the reader is even aware it is an HTML/binary post. --S. |

"Warren" wrote in message ... madgardener wrote: And just when does posting a JPG of a gardening wonder constitute being frowned upon? The following things can happen when a binary is posted in a non-binary group: 1. Some servers won't even accept the message. 2. People on dial-up, especially those that pay by the minute, may find themselves paying for crap they didn't want in the first place. 3. Most servers allocate a certain amount of space for each group based on whether the group is a discussion or binary group. Essentially everytime someone posts a text message in a text group, an old message is deleted. When someone posts a binary, a couple hundred old messages may end up deleted. Not a big deal if there was three or four months worth of messages there, but a big deal if the server in question only had about a week's worth of messages. One big picture could delete a lot of messages that people didn't get a chance to read yet. 4. Binary or HTML posts can sometimes cause older computers to freeze up. This has happened to me occasionally--I've had to completely turn the computer off and log on again. I don't know why the simple netiquette rules should be so hard to follow. A mistake now and then is expected, but the declarations of being able to do exactly as one wants, regardless of the rest of the group, escapes me. --S. |

SKYlark wrote: ok!!! i'm HOLLERING...could you .jpg me a pic? I did a pile of gardening prep work this weekend and noted that my fence has a bout had it. It is one of those ornamental things, just a pile of logs trimming the edge of the walkway. It does serve no useful purpose. Gave the house a kind of rustic feeling on one corner, even though it is your average brick rancher of no note. While driving around for supplies, I saw this one fence someone put up, but I don't know what it is called. It is basically a bunch of logs criss crossing reminiscent of forts made in childhood at camp. My father said it is called a natural fence and is made of walnut but I had disbelief to that. The name and the wood both. The length of the logs would be too long for my corner of the world. But I wanted to make one that is shorter of logs and cuter. Mostly because my dog died recently and sticks was his favorite thing. So i Thought it would be kind of cute. Does anyone have a clue what I am describing and whether it is sane to do this. I remember in campe when we made these fences, we sometimes did these 8 loops with rope to keep them stabler. I thought maybe some pretty colors of braids would make it prettier still. mk5000 "I was conscious of putting on a smile that said Grad Student or something safe, but with whatever had happened to my face, with the peyote skating through my being, I just felt cockeyed and gravidly insane.
