Get Firefox, and the adblocker extension. Block any and all traffic
from the adserver that gave you the nasty ad. Easy peasy. I don't see
nearly so much garbage as I used to.

Dusty, I found it, I answered my own question. maybe I'm not so

helpless
after all, LOL!

Here's something interesting about these pop ups and such.

Turning off Java will stop some, shutting off active-x will shut off the
rest.

Websites are starting to require Java and scripts to be allowed for their
content to be viewed, which means they are requiring you to allow
intrusions, monitoring, and weakening your defenses just to see their
website.

Want to see someone's catalog, map, or video, you have to allow them to
monitor your internet activities.

Even more interesting is that some of the personal firewall protection
software run on active-x and Java, so if you disable them in windows the
software won't run.

So basically you're screwed. If the software companies want their software
to not be blocked, they'll pay for it and the firewall software companies
will allow it.

Welcome to the benefits of capitalism when the government wants

urestricted
gains and profits.

Oh, great! What a tangled web we weave...

Uninstall flash.
Use any browser other than Internet Exploder.
The general rule of thumb is that if a site requires flash,
it is totally void of content.

I'm pretty happy with Thunderbird... Keeps some of the e-mail viruses

Of course now Firefox and Thunderbird are a substantial share of the
market, and they have security vulnerabilities too... Nothing is perfect.

That's right, Rob. Unfortunately, there are degenerates out there who will
try to contaminate us all.

Yeah, MS products are the primary target, but they are also the primary
group for which remedies are created.

You lose some, you win some....

While I generally agree that disabling Flash is a perfectly
acceptable way of keeping your computer crap-free, there is also
Flashblock (currently version 1.2.9) for FireFox. It replaces the Flash
object with a bland button you can click if you absolutely, positively
HAVE to see the crap.

And then there's also Adblock, in v.5.

See also:

http://addons.mozilla.org/extensions...cation=firefox

It'll make your browsing experience a lot better. Once you bolster
Firefox with the right plugins, it's a lot like owning a phone- but
without the telemarketers (which we all dearly miss, right?).

Kathy,

I use Outlook Express to read usenet. I use Outlook 2000 for Mail and
Firefox for web browsing.

I vastly prefer using individual programs for different tasks - that way I
have more choice. If the Firefox of usenet browsers is released, I can dump
OE and not worry about having to learn a new web browser too.

Now, about OE. I'm not very hardcore about reading UseNet, so OE works just
fine. I do know there are better and/or more popular usenet readers
available, I've never needed to check them out. =)

Kathy,

You are asking for trouble by continuing to use Internet Explorer.

Firefox is a better browser and is not always the target of every virus

and
worm writer on the planet.

I has always amazed me that ad makers think they have to flash you in

the
face to get a sale.

Most ad's like that are written in JavaScript you can turn it off in

most
browsers but be aware that some other web page functions may not work
like
drop downs and buttons.

OK, just to show you how truly stupid I am I assume this is a check box

in
IE under ToolsInternet option advanced settings or somesuch? Or is
there
a popup blocker for these? (Heck maybe I should google this, LOL!!)

Thanks dusty!

Kath,

I'd totally forgotten about adblock on FireFox!

I don't see ads anymore on the web. Period.

It's amazing, refreshing, and I hate using another computer without it to
browse the web.

It's like TiVo - you stop watching commercials when you have TiVo and then
when you're at a friend's house watching live TV with commercials - it's
maddening!

Or even stuck watching TV live at home after you have become used
to skipping commercials and suddenly you catch up to live
broadcast and have to wait thru the rest of the commercials.
