Default Apology to RGO newsgroup

Ray,

I don't mind doing the dirty work around here to keep this little forum nice
and tidy and free from photographs (especially third rate ones from newbies
who have no idea what is truly picturesque orchids)... I have nothing to
lose. And you can certainly "enjoy" the results even though you don't like
my approach.

Default Apology to RGO newsgroup

Welcome to our little corner of Usenet. :-) Apology accepted. It *is* a
wonderful day for a picnic, isn't it!?

I must confess that I didn't see your picture, Troy, and I didn't see Mick's
initial response to it although I can well imagine what it must have looked
like. I am using adelphia Usenet servers to view this newsgroup and they in
turn draw their newsfeeds from giganews. I think giganews blocks picture
files in non-binary hierarchies but I don't understand where Mick's initial
response to it went. So, the first I have seen of this little spat is this
apology. I suspect there are a large number of people who never even saw
your picture or Mick's initial response to it. But I may be wrong. I often
am. Did any adelphia users see this picture?

I also noticed this apology on abpo, but again no picture or Mick's
response. You didn't need to apologize to *abpo* for posting a picture.
That is where you can post them without fear of offending our delicate
sensibilities.

FWIW, I kind of liken this type of crime to putting your elbows on the table
during our picnic. Pure Evil. A picnic with visible elbows! However, I am
puzzled that the punishment for this infraction seems to be the forced
removal of your arms above the elbow with a chain saw. That is just so
"Alice and the Red Queen," because I *do* think that chain saws are as
inappropriate at meals as elbows. All this bar and chain oil flying
everywhere. It's really quite messy, don't you think? But, I'm hardly Miss
Manners and what do I know? Yet, if I *had* known there would be chain saws
I would not have brought my good table linens to the festivities.

From where I am eating it looks to me that Mick, far from disliking
pictures, actually lies in wait for them. He calls it dirty work, I think,
but if it makes him money, ah well.... I guess a chain saw at the table is
here to stay. I can imagine a worst case scenario where doppelgangers (my
favorite word) newbies post pictures and run but I am sure that's not
happening here. Mick always demonstrates far too much honor for me to
suspect him of being party to such a thing.

If I have any say in this at all, and I am sure I don't, so I won't go on
too much longer, I would ask Mick to be a bit nicer the first time a new
poster does something as horrible as what you have just apologized for
doing. But short of asking I do not see what else I can do so I hesitate to
get involved.

Well, isn't it a lovely day? Could someone please scoop the blood and
bar/chain oil from the top of the fruit salad and pass it this way. Thank
you.

Wow, Mick

The upload to RGO was certainly an error, and I do sincerely apologize to
all. (My news reader added the address automatically and I was unaware it
was sent to RGO until I was so informed.)

I was also going to order from your company, OrchidFlask.com, but having

now
experienced your attitude, I can only imagine how you treat your customers
and their questions.

I can't believe that a few orchid photos could cause one so much rage.

I am playing Devil's advocate he

I find myself in the uncomfortable situation of defending bad manners and
rudeness, but the thing is that on 02/10/2004 I posted a polite response to
the first picture that Troy posted to both ABPO and RGO.
My response is archived in Google, Troy's picture is not because Google does
not archive picture posts.
URL:http://groups.google.com/groups?selm....gnilin k.net
So you see this is not a first time offense. Troy either did not read my
response, but I think it is more likely that Troy ignored my friendly
reprimand -- I replied to both abpo and rgo, so even if Troy did not
knowingly cross-post he should have seen the reply (unless like Al's server,
Troy's server swallows posts selectively). I must admit that I am also a bit
suspicious of Troy's claim that he did not know that his newsreader added
rec.gardens.orchids without his knowledge. I can't at this point say that
this is not possible, but I have my doubts. What newsreader would that be?
How does that happen?

If noone says anything when someone does something wrong, or if we only
reply with polite reminders of the netiquette, in the end I suspect more
people would ignore them. While I do not generally think that being rude is
a good solution, and thus am somewhat uncomfortable with the stance I am
taking here, still I think that sometimes even a polite group such as ours
needs to be shaken up. While I would hate to be at the receiving end of one
of Mick's rants myself (and there are times when I have deserved them if not
here then at abpo, where I have at times posted pictures of bad quality and
forgetting to size them down, and I have at least on one occasion posted a
message without thinking that caused someone grief or offense), however, the
truth is that it is very difficult to ignore Mick's rants, and thus while
unpleasant, his way may actually be effective in ensuring that people pay
attention.

Maybe we can find a middle way, something in between polite reminders and
chainsaws cutting off hands at picnic tables. However, as always each of us
is responsible for what we post, and the impression that we make to the
world. This is a free unmoderated forum. One of the downsides of it is that
we need to moderate it ourselves. Some of us are better at being polite than
others, but politeness is not always the highest virtue, and while I agree
that some of the things Mick spouted were too extreme, I suspect Troy and
the many readers throughout the world will get over the shock of reading his
posts, and if one does not want to be offended in the future, there is
always the option of not reading any posts written by Mick Fournier (and I
suspect he won't care if you decide to boycott him through selective reading
as well).

Al,

Ah... the old gang is coming back in force having a reunion weighing in on
this ever intensifying inconsequential bullshit thread. In time "they" will
all be back in the sweet loving arms of controversy and proper table
manners.

Yes, I do love to chew the heads off photo uploaders (esp the ones with
kindergarten orchid photos)... they are such primitive barbarians. And, I
do love to run the chainsaw over those pansy bleeding hearts (usually wimpy
tree-hugging Americans) that come to these barbarians' rescue... it warms my
heart so, and it certainly does pump up the cash register on orchid flask
sales for me also. Can you feel the RGO "juice" intensifying in Virginia
also? Is it possible your hitcounter awoke you from a slumber setting off a
bell prompting you to see what is going on at RGO? Hmmm, now I wonder.

Bella Lagosi (Dracula) once said there is no such thing as "bad"
publicity... it is all good publicity.

Al, I need more bleeding hearts to take a pot shot at my company... as
opposed to me directly as it should have been in the first place with Troy
if he were really a true confrontational man. You all know how much I hate
to broadcast (self-promote) my URL on RGO... so I need more flamers to list
it and tell other RGOers (especially newbies) where they can buy rare
species in flasks. What can I do to get more wimpy crybaby bleeding hearts
to say they are boycotting my website?... and name my site for me
specifically in their posts?

Mick

I never get pictures on RGO. Even before Adelphia linked up with
Giganews, pictures didn't appear on RGO but there was a time in the
past when they often did.
I did get the original pictures on ABPO. For unknown reasons, this
entire thread is now missing from ABPO if read from Adelphia's #1
server. It remains on their #3 server. Mick's original bomb was only
dropped on RGO and I do still see it here on RGO via Adelphia#1.
Perhaps Mick's original reply burned out some connections here and
there. ;-)

Larry,
Yes, I know. :-)

And I must admit that as far as the quality offense is concerned I have
ignored it on purpose, knowing full well that my photos were low quality,
but if I waited until I had high quality photos I could not post orchid
photos at all, since I am almost a hopelessly bad photographer who only on
rare occasions gets a good photo by accident. However, I wanted to share my
excitement and since I knew that my hand won't get chopped off for posting a
bad quality photo on abpo, I did it anyway. Now if I had posted the same
photos on rgo, I would have gotten my hand chopped of by Mick, and I would
have gotten over it, but I probably would have posted bad quality photos
here again.

As for photo size not being a mandate in the abpo charter, maybe it should
be.

I actually think that a much more serious offense is whenever we reply to
pictures on abpo with meaningful and worthwhile textual content that could
be of benefit to others. And I don't know whether that is an offense against
the charter, but if it is not it really should be. Since abpo is not
archived and many people have access only to rgo, these messages that really
should be in rgo have a limited audience if they are not forwarded to rgo. I
wish we were as good or better about policing the
no-informative-text-only-posts-in-abpo rule as we are about policing the
no-pictures-in-rgo rule. But to my knowledge noone has been flamed yet for
posting really worthwhile text content to abpo, or have they?
