My first orchid. (what is it?)
Hey guys n' gals...
stumbled across this message board while in google and you all seem to know the goods on orchids so I registered hoping somebody could assist me in identifying my orchid. My girlfriend bought me an orchid for my birthday. Why she would choose such a 'fussy' flower is beyond me... as I don't fancy myself the 'nurturing' type. I know nothing about orchids and have only heard comments that would lead me to believe it is very difficult to take care of. First off... here's a couple pictures of the orchid. http://a6.cpimg.com/image/68/A0/3347...-01800200-.jpg http://a7.cpimg.com/image/69/A0/3347...-02000180-.jpg How can I identify this orchid ? thanks a whole bunch in advance for all your time. p. |

What you've got there, TO, is a phalaenopsis, or "moth orchid." It is doubtful that you'll get a
more specific ID, but that should suffice. From my perspective, they are actually one of the least fussy orchids out there, and many beginners find them to be particularly easy to grow. They seem to do quite well if grown along side of African Violets, if that's any help to you. There is info all over the web about them, but you might start with checking out the culture information under the Free InformationBasic Culture links at my website (URL below). One of the key things to remember about orchids is that they are primarily a group of epiphytic plants, so they need lots of air flow to the root system in addition to water and nutrition. -- Ray Barkalow - First Rays Orchids - www.firstrays.com Plants, Supplies, Books, Artwork, and Lots of Free Info! .. . . . . . . . . . . Did you think maybe she is just checking out the 'nurturing' ability or your 'softer side'? This is a lovely Phal hybrid. Name unknown. Very easy to grow and proof positive you can remember some other living thing... SuE http://orchids.legolas.org/gallery/albums.php |

Welcome p. & happy belated birthday. What a neat gift.
You have already received some good advice but stay around as you will always get answers to your questions. Your phalaenopsis flowers probably won't last too much longer, then I would re pot it in a loose airy mix. You can purchase small bag at a nursery. In the mean time don't overwater it & do not let it sit in a saucer with water. They like to be kept warmish, room temps but also with fresh air. -- Cheers Wendy Remove PETERPAN for email reply Toronto Orchids wrote: Hey guys n' gals... stumbled across this message board while in google and you all seem to know the goods on orchids so I registered hoping somebody could assist me in identifying my orchid. My first orchid. (what is it?)
Hi, TO,
All of the above with a special directive to do as Ray says and check out his web site for information. Phalaenopsis, generally, like indirect light (a couple of feet from an east window works), a bit of humidity, moist but not soppy medium, and always, always when watering it must be in the morning so that the leaves have a chance to dry before the chillier night temps. Contrary to what you may have read, orchids are not especially fussy. It's their owners who get fussy, and that is when the plants don't do so well, LOL. Stick around, and ask away. Diana |

The cross was registered in 2002. So you just learned another fact about your new plant. SuE http://orchids.legolas.org/gallery/albums.php |

Deventeriana 'Treva' HCC/AOS is a very well known parent of yellow hybrids.
Usually gives a yellow flower with white at the center, like yours. Brother Stage has not received any awards from the AOS, it may have some from another country. 'Brother' is the name of the nursery congloerate that produced the cross. It has some of the same species in its background as Deventeriana. Hybridizing in yellows is trying to get away from the white center to the flowers, and have a total yellow flower, but yours is quite charming by itself. My first orchid was in the form of a corsage, approximately 35 years
ago. I also have had a similar plant for about 25 or more years -- pink and white. Cymbidium orchids are probably the easiest for the California beginner as the standards are generally grown out-of-doors. .. . . Pam Everything Orchid Management System http://www.pe.net/~profpam/page3.html |
