Diana delighted to have you back, roofless and all!

Here we are! Alive and kicking! What a mess, though. Frank and I have
joined the "blue roof" contingent, but it could be much worse.

More tomorrow; just got power back this afternoon.

A note: Kenni, glad you're okay. Odom's lost their huge Phal house, but
the Catts, etc are probably okay.

It's great to know that you are safe & sound. Not sure what the "Blue Roof
contingent" is? Welcome back.

Hah! 'Blue Roof' describes those of us who now have tarps on our roofs, to
protect from the elements. My son Mike came yesterday to install the tarps
tht wr got 3hile waiting in the 'refugee line'. Thin tarps, we will need to
do better if we can't get repairs soon.

Having to reposition many plamts, since the screen shade is gone in mqny
places. Even with help, we are having sunburn.

Very weary, and much work to do. Thank you all in this group for al;l of
your support!

Blue Poly Tarps used to cover the damaged roofs...lots of them this
time around.

You know back in 2000 a Republican friend of mine warned me that if I voted for Al Gore and he won, the stock market would tank, we'd lose millions of jobs, and our military would be totally overstretched.

Oh, golly, guys! We are not roofless! We lost some shingles during Frances,
but not many. Then during Jeanne more came off, and we could see plywood in
a couple of spots, so it was time to cover up. It is clear that water got
into the attic area, because we can see the seams on the ceiling in the
dining room and also stains on some paint, but the only place that we
actually had water in the house was in the master bath, and though it is
totally dry now there is damage to the baseboards and probably to the
sheetrock and insulation. We are high here, so no danger of flooding; this
is water that gained entry through either the damaged roof or drove through
a wall.

Believe me, after hearing from some of our orchid friends in the area, we
know how lucky we are. One gentleman in Indian River County (north of us)
wrote today that he had 3 or 4 feet of water come inside; his flasks were
floating alongside refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. He has lost so
much. He signed off with an "xo" and said he was on his way to see if he
could save some baby orchids. And an 84 year old woman whom we know refuses
to leave her trashed mobile home until the insurance adjuster gets there on
Tuesday, making us absolutely insane about her.

Whew! Glad that you're okay! Hope that Casper Kitty is okay too. Purrs
and warm wishes coming your way.

We have a trip scheduled to Orlando, Florida, this coming weekend and
have decided not to cancel. Hope to see some of the posters at the
judging at Leu Gardens on Saturday. Hurricanes come and go, but orchids
are forever ;-)

Hi, all: Jeanne was considerably stronger than Frances, and coming in
before we could even get the Frances damage repaired of course made it
worse. But for the most part, we are OK: humans and critters are all alive
and only slightly worse for wear; our home and office are livable and have
only minor damage. The shadehouse needs a LOT of work, but I don't think we
will lose more than a few orchids [those knocked around where the sidewall
breached and took out a few rods]. Our power came back on last night, along
with our cable. The landline phone and fax are still out, but BellSouth is
managing to forward my incoming phone calls to my mobile number. We will
not be shipping today but should be able to resume for next week. So, all in
all, I'm feeling very lucky.

I know that those north of us were much harder hit, I hope everyone is OK.

We are North & did get much harder hit--- but like someone wrote in
response to Francis--- we're supposed to maintain a sense of
humor--correct???? Now we have 3 greenhouses totaled and a 10 X 45'
trailer. Still have hundreds of thousands of plants that seem to be
O.K. but they do look a little worried. (that's as much humor as I can
muster) Looking at the biggest remodeling job I ever saw. But I'm
still "growing" and the house & lab are unscathed. I even got power &
cable & phones Friday night!!! LOTS OF GOOD BUYS ON ONCIDIINAE
INTERGENERICS!!!
I hope everyone is back to normal soon & remember: no more greenhouses
& shadehouses--- Atomic Bomb shelters with auto water-humidifiers &
metal halide lighting!!! Good Luck to all, Bill

Yes, Casper the Wonder Cat is fine. Frank no sooner shook out a blanket to
throw on the sofa during the storm than Casper was on it getting ready for a
nap.

Glad you are going to Orlando. I think you will find it to be fine; they
were largely untouched by Jeanne, and they can surely use the tourism now.

LOL, glad to hear from you, Bill. No bomb shelters for us here - Florida is
still Paradise, albeit Paradise Lost for the past month or so. Remember that
this area has not seen something like this since the 1940's, and hey - we
could be living in Washington and waiting out Mt. St. Helens!

This year I am not sure the Bomb shelters of the 50's would have
helped. Glad to hear we have not lost any of our FL group
completely.

Still kickin', Sue! Can't wait for the plants to realize that the peril is
over; I expect them to come back with a vengeance. We lost a few, but they
were on life support before this all began.

My last "real" hurricane [before Frances and Jeanne] was in 1964 -- Cleo,
when I was in Ft. Lauderdale --and I have to tell you, these storms a lot
easier to deal with when you're a child. During Cleo,I slept through the
actual storm, rejoiced that school was cancelled for several days, enjoyed
having dry Sugar Smacks for lunch while the power was out for many days
afterward, and didn't have to worry about paying for the repairs. [I think
my allowance back then was about 50 cents a week, wouldn't've gone far G].

Yes, I know, we had Irene a few years ago but that was a nit; it's still
debated whether that was even a Cat 1 when it made landfall, and I'm sure it
wasn't by the time it got here. So I'm not even counting it.

Having now had 2 in 3 weeks, I sincerely hope we have at least another 40,
and preferably 80, years before the next one.

I hope the group won't be offended by a reminder that those of us
professional growers affected by these storms [along with those affected by
Charley and Ivan] really need your business right now. We're facing stiff
repair bills on top of a month of virtually no sales due to the hurricanes.
So if you're thinking that you're doing us a favor by leaving us alone to do
repairs -- please, re-think, and dust off your wish list! One of us _must_
have something you've been lusting after, and for those of you up north, now
is the time, rather than later in the year when your cold weather may
prevent shipping.
