Hi all,
Just curious if any of you have placed a plecostomus in your ponds? Any negative outcomes? -- best, doug |

Algae eaters in Koi/Comet pond?

The downside I see is that you would have to remove them when your water wasn't warm enough. They are tropical fish. I had some Oscars in my pond for a few years (May-Sept) They were interesting to watch in the pond. Hard to catch in fall to bring them inside. San Diego Joe 4,000 - 5,000 Gallons. Koi, Goldfish, and RES named Colombo. |

They grow fast in warm water...and also seem to like bugging the koi.

Algae eaters in Koi/Comet pond?
I have had five plecostomus in our small (90 gallon) pond for three years
now with great results. We have to catch them and bring them inside for the winter though.. When we bought them, they only two or three inches long but in the Koi pond they have grown to be over 12 inches long! I had to get a larger aquarium last fall to keep them in during the winter. This past weekend I competed the expansion of our pond. It is now 1800 gallons with a 3'-0" tall water fall. The Kio, Comets and Plecostomus just love it. Algae eaters in Koi/Comet pond?
I've never had them in the pond. Since they're mostly nocturnal they tend
to stress the koi at night. I know I had to quit having them in with the goldfish as they tend to like the taste of slime coat on them, I'm sure they might suck on a sleeping koi also. ~ jan ------------ Zone 7a, SE Washington State Ponds: www.jjspond.us |

Algae eaters in Koi/Comet pond?
Jo Ann was called in to empty a pond with 30 or so big koi when the owner decided to
move to a hi rise condo. The koi were darting all over and had strange round marks on them. The woman had been having problems with bacterial infection and some of the koi had jumped, in fact one had broken its back. As Jo Ann and Steve netted and drew down the pond they got to the last few inches and discovered a couple huge plecos down there. When the koi were moved into Jo Ann's pond they all slowed down into that slow moving koi meandering. No more mysterious round marks or infections either. never put algae eaters in with koi. they learn to love koi slime and remove the slime the koi are going to get infections.
